Suckling über: Sammlerbox: Les Vérités - Trio (La Muse - La Joie - Le Désir)

La Joie: Gorgeous, structured, balanced and layered, this is a complex, deep and elegant wine that offers wonderful fruit, detailed spices, toast, minerals and savory accents. Black-cherry, blueberry, graphite and tobacco-leaf aromas and flavors. It’s difficult to think of a more complete, harmonious and fascinating cabernet sauvignon from California. Drinkable now and best from 2035. 100 *** La Desir: So pretty, layered, elegant and sophisticated, showing distinctive, delicious dark fruit with spices and savory notes. Aromas and flavors move from rose petals, violets, red and black cherries, blackcurrants and orange peel to herbs and nutmeg. Well-balanced with a lacy texture of firm, fine-grained tannins that are smooth and silky. Drinkable now and best from 2030. 100 *** La Muse: This beautiful merlot-based wine offers depth, silkiness, layering and subtle, enticing flavors. It tightens up snugly on the palate while fine, powdery tannins add texture and good acidity gives balance. An age-worthy red and a great example of an excellent vintage. Blended with 6% cabernet franc and 5% malbec. Drink now or hold. 99

Colin Hay über: Sammlerbox: Les Vérités - Trio (La Muse - La Joie - Le Désir)

La Joie: You might imagine this to be pure Cabernet Sauvignon from the aromatics, so pure and expressive is it. Walnut, again, like La Muse but this is so different with an equally profound sense of intensity, concentration and density at the core. La Joie is tight and taut, muscular and shapely – Sonoma Cabernet at its very, very best and at its purest too. On the attack, this is more ample at first than you anticipate. It’s both hedonistic but also serious if that’s possible – with great intensity and brilliantly grippy and beady tannins, so redolent again of the varietal. This is also a wine for the ages. La Muse is accessible now; this really needs two decades of aging. The composition of the blend brings so much complexity to this – with even the 5% Petit Verdot so crucial to the identity of the wine, bringing a certain spicy pepperiness. Above all though, this is a wine that shows just how good the vintage is. And I just the Vérité signature florality on the finish. 100 *** Le Desir: There’s no Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blend in 2023 and that feels just right, for this is exquisitely balanced and exudes a natural harmony and composure. We have a fascinating floral complexity – classical notes of iris, peony and lily of the valley and a hint of verbena too but also, ore intriguingly for me, almost a touch of holly berry, freshly crushed fennel seeds and rosehip. There’s rose petal too and maybe just a hint of rosescented Turkish delight, but with none of the sweetness that can imply. On the palate I’m more struck by the lovely fresh menthol notes too, and the cedar. Perfection. Le Désir is so ample, and so spherical, the filigree tannins divinely textured. It’s radiant in its purity, crystalline to the core and staggeringly and shimmeringly beautiful. I adore this. Le Désir is, in this vintage more than any one I have tasted I think, mon désir! 100 *** La Muse: Gorgeous. The most of the three and strikingly pure once again. Plummy in its fruit profile, with a lovely quite distinct damson stone note alongside the plump dark berries and graphite. There’s a little hint of rose peppercorn, gently crushed, with the slight florality that imparts. There’s a hint too of walnut shell and the subtlest suggestion of cedar. And then a little peony. We could almost be in Pomerol from the aromatics. Ample, full, supremely crystalline and pure, the product of a very gentle extraction. Sunny, but subtly so. The luminous quality of the midpalate is incredible. Another gravitydefying wine from Vérité, with incredible lift. A staggering wine and not perhaps what you expect from Sonoma Merlot. I can’t remember a better La Muse. 98
