A co-planted and co-fermented blend of around 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 La Craie presents the property's south-facing slope, situated on its shallowest soils laden with calcareous stones. It routinely delivers one of the most sophisticated and multidimensional examples of Gualtallary, and this iteration is certainly no exception. It functions as a combination of the other wines in the range while also exhibiting a unique personality, one that weaves together floral overtones, a sumptuous core and palpable tension. It has a distinctly dense tannin structure that propels and energizes the wine in a way typically associated with acidity or minerality. As with the entire range of Per Se's 2023s, this is all the more impressive in the context of a warm, challenging vintage, and the wine displays none of the stressed character one would expect under such conditions.

Galloni über: La Craie Gualtallary

The 2023 La Craie is a co-fermentation of mostly Malbec with a smaller portion of Cabernet Franc. The nose delivers violet, tart cherry, subtle ash, blueberry and blood orange notes. The chalky palate is compact yet ethereal, with delicate tension and vibrant freshness. This is an amazingly complex, finely layered red with a tightly wound structure and such a clear identity.

Tim Atkin über: La Craie Gualtallary

In a region that has come to specialise in the two varieties, La Craie stands out as one of the very best blends of Malbec and 20% co-fermented Cabernet Franc. The former comes from cooler, south-facing vines, the latter from the plateau, producing an harmonious blend that is more than the sum of its parts. Sappy, tangy, vibrant and energetic, it displays violet, jarilla and coriander aromas, filigree tannins, chalky intensity and racy plum and black cherry fruit.

Decanter über: La Craie Gualtallary

Located in Gualtallary Monasterio at 1,500m, PerSe's La Craie parcel has a southerly exposure and rocky soils with a marked concentration of limestone. Aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels, this co-fermentation of Malbec with 20% Cabernet Franc is a linear and taut wine with aromas of violets, crunchy red fruit and wild herbs. Compact, with chalky tannins, it's a serious and elegant wine.,
