Ser Lapo Chianti Classico Riserva
Sangiovese is softened with 10% Merlot in the Mazzei 2023 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo. The wine shows pretty savory intensity, especially on the back end, with dark fruit and sweet spice. There is more richness here, with a medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel and plenty of fruit weight, yet it remains nicely balanced. Fruit comes from the Cornia vineyard, at 250 to 330 meters above sea level with clay and limestone soils, and from Caggiolo, at 290 to 350 meters in elevation with alberese and clay formations. The wine ages for 12 months in 225- and 500-liter French oak, with 50% new wood. This is a generous production of 310,000 bottles.
