Lobenberg: In der Farbe schwarzrot, fast schwarz. Voluminöse Nase. Leichte Süße. Etwas undifferenziert. Im Mund sehr voluminös, sehr vordergründige dicke Frucht. In diesem Jahr extrem hoher Merlotanteil, das ist gut für die Menge und Dicke, leider in Anbetracht eines überragenden Cabernet-Jahres der Finesse abträglich. Insgesamt ein sehr kalifornischer Wein, passt gar nicht zum so geschliffenen Stil des Jahrgangs, wenngleich alle Tannine butterweich sind. Keine spitze Säure. Ungemein rund. So etwas aus Kalifornien und es wäre toll. Für Bordeaux dieses Jahres finde ich ihn insgesamt, obwohl er sicherlich Klasse hat, etwas zu dick und rund, zuviel Merlot, trotz hervorragender Balance. 94-96+ -- WW: Extrem dunkle Farbe, satt mit violetten Reflexen. Reiches, enorm vielschichtiges Bouquet, Zedern, reife Beeren, schwarze Kirschen, Lakritze, viel Edelhölzer. Komplexer, perfekt gegliederter Gaumen, viel Finessen in den reifen, fast seidigen Tanninen, Eleganz und Reichtum in perfekter Harmonie, im Finale helles Malz, Tabak, Schwarztee und wiederum ein faszinierendes Edelholzspiel. Der grösste Ducru seit Jahren. 98-100/100

-- Decanter: A gorgeously silky, juicy and balanced glass of wine, this combines elegant richness of sweet cocoa and blackberry, with tons of power and a feeling of holding itself in check. This is signature St Julien, concentrated yet delicate, just an utterly lovely wine that has good acidity, with tannins that have melted into the rest of the structure and fruit that is still absolutely in control, followed by a saline edge to the finish. There's a long road ahead still, but this is a standout Ducru. 98/100

-- Lisa Perrotti Brown: The 2005 Ducru-Beaucaillou, 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Merlot, is deep garnet in color with a touch of brick. It needs a fair bit of shaking before it erupts with the most spectacular perfume of kirsch, warm cassis, rose oil, and licorice, followed by hints of unsmoked cigars, crushed rocks, and fragrant soil. The medium to full-bodied palate has a firm, grainy texture and compelling tension, beautifully framing the red and black fruit layers, and finishing with a firework display of floral and mineral notes. 98/100

-- Jeb Dunnuck: The 2005 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is still stunning, with an incredible bouquet of ripe currants, spicy herbs, tobacco, and smoke, with a kiss of savory flowers in the background. Rich, full-bodied, and powerful on the palate, it has nicely integrated tannins, a layered mouthfeel, and awesome length on the finish. It's just now at the early stages of its prime drinking window and has another 30 years or so of prime drinking. 98/100

-- Parker: The 2005 Ducru Beaucaillou is a 10,000-case blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot (they used to produce 18,000-20,000 cases). It is an exceptionally powerful wine with a dense purple color, superb intensity, and a beautiful, sweet nose of spring flowers, raspberries, blueberries, graphite, and creme de cassis. Full-bodied with fabulous concentration, exceptionally high tannin, good acidity, and massive layers of richness that build incrementally on the palate, this monumental effort is more structured than their outstanding 2003. It may be the finest wine produced at this estate since the 1982 and 1961 Ducrus. 97/100
