Montsant Vertebra Garnacha
The 2023 Vèrtebra de La Figuera is pure Garnacha from a vineyard they own in the village of La Figuera from bunches with a thinner skin and larger grapes. It's classical La Figuera (they call it Garnacha Fina), which delivers finer wines cropped from vines at 600 meters in altitude on pink clay and gypsum soils. These clusters fermented whole in concrete with indigenous yeasts for a week, and the wine matured in concrete for six months. This is the palest of the reds, and even though the concrete is less reductive than stainless steel, the wine feels very closed and primary, quite ungiving at first. There's cleanliness and precision here; it has finesse, some spice, good ripeness and balance. It comes in at 13% alcohol and has a medium-bodied palate with a nice backbone and very fine tannins and a caressing mouthfeel. It needs a little bit of time in a decanter or, probably better, a couple of years in bottle. It's a step up in finesse, complexity and depth from the Negre. 1,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2024.
