Lobenberg: Wenn man d'Yquem sammeln möchte und jung genug ist, 30 und mehr Jahre auf den perfekten Genuss zu warten, dann sicher mit einer Sammlerkiste. Wenn man Glück hat und eine so rare Kiste mit 1988, 1989 und 1990 findet, verkürzt sich die Wartezeit bis zur Perfektion erheblich. Diese Jahre sind Ikonen auf Yquem, rar, schwer zu finden, als Sammlerbox sicher so etwas wie der Olymp. Das Weingut wurde von der Familie Saluce (de Fargues) gegründet. 100 ha Kies-Lehmböden unter Reben, davon 60 ha im Erstwein. In der Neuzeit wurden dann in schwierigen Zeiten reiche Industrie-Partner aufgenommen, die dann um des eigenen Prestige willen die Familie Saluce zuerst von der Geschäftsführung ausschloss und dann schließlich alles übernahm. Da den neuen Herren auch Cheval Blanc gehört, wurde der dortige Regisseur, Pierre Lurton, auch zum Chef von d’Yquem gemacht. Die Tradition wurde erweitert, die Qualität hat jedoch auf gar keinen Fall gelitten. Nur die Preise wurden weiter erhöht… Na, von irgendwas muss man den Kaufpreis bei so brutal geringen Erträgen ja auch erwirtschaften. Aber man scheut auch keine Mühe! Yquem unterhält schon seit 1896 eine eigene Wetterstation, alle Werte und Vergleiche in jedem Detail sind jederzeit möglich, das ist schon ziemlich perfekt, wie alles hier auf Yquem. 98-100/100

-- Parker: 1988: The 1988 is a more backward-styled Yquem than the 1989, built along the lines of the extraordinary 1975. With a honeyed, smoky, orange/coconut/pineapple-scented nose, this powerful wine possesses full body, layers of highly concentrated, extracted flavors, considerable botrytis, and a sensational finish. 99/1001989: Notable for being a very hot Bordeaux vintage, 1989 is also the year that the vines were hit by a violent hailstorm in July, which damaged the western half of the vineyard. Since the berries were still quite small and hard at that stage, the impact was minimized to about 20% crop loss overall. Thereafter, the vines soldiered on to produce a stunningly concentrated crop this year. 97/1001990: An extraordinary effort, Yquem's 1990 is a rich and fabulously superb, sweet wine. This wine also possesses lots of elegance and finesse. The wine's medium gold color is accompanied by an exceptionally sweet nose of honeyed tropical fruits, peaches, coconut, and apricots. High quality, subtle toasty oak is well-integrated. The wine is massive on the palate, with layers of intensely ripe botrytis-tinged, exceptionally sweet fruit. Surprisingly well-integrated acidity, and a seamless, full-bodied power and richness have created a wine of remarkable harmony and purity. Certainly it is one of the richest Yquems I have ever tasted, with 50-100 years of potential longevity. An awesome Yquem!99/100

-- Weingut: 1988: Spring was warm, but very wet, with late flowering.. However, the tide turned in July when beautiful weather set in. The harvest began late, in mid-October, and stretched until All Saints' Day. The grapes developed evenly during this time and were able to take their time to reach complete maturity. There were six passes altogether, each of excellent quality. 88 Yqeum is very full and classic.1989: The weather conditions this year were extreme and unsettled, culminating in a terrible hail storm in early July that destroyed a quarter of the crop. The weather was nevertheless very sunny and hot when it came time to pick. 1989 is a very powerful wine that has a rare profile in keeping with such memorable vintages as 1929, 1947, and 1949.1990: A vintage that reflects a beautiful hot, dry summer that stopped short of anything excessive. Lasting from 17/9 to 10/10, the harvest was very intense – picking took place every day during that time, except on weekends. The weather was outstanding, the grapes were ideal, and this is an extraordinary, amazingly successful vintage – an archetypal great Yquem with tremendous balance, power, and finesse.
