Owen Latta ist einer der talentiertesten, jungen Winzer Australiens. Er baut seine Chardonnay-Weine 12 Monate lang größtenteils in 300 Liter fassenden Hogsheads aus – eine Mischung von österreichischen Stockinger und den originalen Burgunder Sirugue Fässern, Cuvée Chardonnay. Es sind zudem 600 und 1.500 Liter fassende Fuderfässer im Einsatz, um den Holzeinfluss zu minimieren. 20 bis 50 Prozent der Fässer sind je nach Jahrgang neu. Die Lage Two Mile Creek gehört einer befreundeten Familie. Seit 2017 bearbeitet Owen die Parzelle mit seinem Team vom Pruning bis zur Lese. Mittleres Zitronengelb mit öligen Tränen. Beim Reinriechen werde ich in blühende Wiesen auf Höhenlagen katapultiert – dieser Wein duftet unendlich verführerisch und riecht nach Bergluft und Freiheit! Gelbes Steinobst, reifer Pfirsich, saftige gelbe Äpfel, Kamillenblüten, auch etwas Kumquat und Mandarinenschale tauchen auf, aber dieser individuelle, frisch duftende Charakter bleibt. Im Mund ist der Wein spannungsgeladen und ultra frisch. Zitronensaft und -Abrieb, weiße Blüten und gelbe Birnen. Eine intensive, salzig-kalkige Mineralität zieht sich schnurstracks über meine Zunge. Das ist ein als Chardonnay getarnter Riesling. So viel Frische und Spannung aus Australien?! Just Wow!

Parker über: Two Mile Hill Chardonnay

The 2023 Two Mile Hill Chardonnay is a rich toasty wine, yet it is tethered to the rails of cool acidity. This is both taut and mineral while also displaying attractive amplitude and complexity as well. I like it so much. There are notes of salted yellow peaches, lemon flesh, chalk, green apples and cashews. The chalky texture that lingers after the wine is gone is a particularly attractive trait. Warmly recommended. 12.6% alcohol, sealed under Diam and wax.

Suckling über: Two Mile Hill Chardonnay

What a wine! Oxidative, nutty aromas of lemon confit, salted nuts, Comté cheese rind, oyster shells, flint and chalk. The palate is mid-weighted and textural, with a saline, mineral drive that brings a nervy, grapefruit-like tension underneath the expressive and rounded mouthfeel. This has all the hallmarks of the finest topped-style Jura chardonnays, with a touch of polish. Delicious. Drink or hold.

Winepilot über: Two Mile Hill Chardonnay

Fruit comes from the Two Mile Hill vineyard, around seven kilometres from Eastern Peake, planted in 2017 by the Schaefer family under the Latta’s guidance. The four-acre site has three soil types; the Chardonnay sits on rich red volcanic soils, facing slightly south-west. Whole-bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in 300L hogsheads. Full solids, full malo, full flavour. Pale yellow-gold. A core of baked yellow apple, poached pear and peach skin is laced with grilled macadamia and cedar. Hints of tonic, wet stone and citrus preserves add bite and lift. The palate is sapid and intense, with yellow peach, Meyer lemon, pear and yellow apple layered with nutty savouriness and a mineral edge. Fine phenolics pull it to a gentle but purposeful length. This is rich, nutty and savoury, yet kept fresh and bright by vibrant fruit and mineral tension. A strong release.
