Lobenberg: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot. Das Schwesterweingut von Lynch Bages, gleiche Besitzverhältnisse. Die Nase ist, anders als in anderen Jahren, die der des Lynch Bages verblüffend ähnlich. Vielleicht einen Hauch weniger Feinheit im Baron. Etwas rustikalere Pauillac-Ausrichtung. Aber auch hier, trotz hohem Cabernetanteil, eher Merlot-Prägung mit feiner süßer Maulbeere, Brombeere, schwarze Kirsche. Schick und fein. Zwar kann er Pichon Comtesse nicht das Wasser reichen, dafür fehlt die Oberfinesse, aber sehr passende, stimmige, charmante Nase. Der Mund in verblüffender Art und Weise bei Lynch Bages. Auch hier sehr Cabernet, sehr klar, gute Ecken und Kanten, feine Definition, aber für mich letztlich nicht dramatisch viel besser als Lynch Bages, dafür aber immer teurer und wie gesagt, beide hinter Pichon Comtesse. Sehr guter, Cabernet orientierter, feiner Pichon Baron, aber Pichon Lalande bleibt vorne. 100/100

-- Decanter: Pichon Baron 2016 is a riveting, classy wine, richly aromatic and expressive from the start with a complex bouquet of black cherry, liquorice, graphite, menthol and subtle spices. The palate combines fleshy texture and linearity. The fine-grained tannins have the laser-like precision that Christian Seely likes so much, and contribute to the overall impression of crystalline purity so conducive to the terroir expression of this benchmark wine destined to reach new heights over the next 20 to 30 years. Magnificent wine. 100/100

-- Suckling: The concentration and largesse of the 2016 Pichon Baron is apparent from the get-go with incredibly alluring, ripe and expansive fruit aromas in the blackberry, dark-cherry, mulberry and plum zone. Espresso and cedar, as well as a slate-like, stony mineral edge add complexity. The palate has incredible depth, drive and detail. Fine and plush tannins stretch the palate in every direction. So fresh and vivacious, this is the greatest Pichon Baron since 1989 and has a long future. Try from 2024. 99/100

-- International Wine Report: The 2016 Château Pichon Baron is drop-dead stunning and one of the most compelling and complete wines from the vintage. Composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, this begins with wonderfully complex aromatics of ripe dark currants, sweet exotic spices, roasted coffee grounds, fresh florals, graphite and hints of loam which all come together seamlessly in the glass. On the palate this follows through and continues to thoroughly impress with its full body and beautifully polished, yet supportive tannins and a deep core of ripe fruit. It demonstrates remarkable depth and concentration along with outstanding balance and finesse leading up to the long, graceful finish. This wine has it all and while it is already quite fascinating in its youth it is ultimately built for the long term. This is an epic vintage for Pichon Baron, and could eventually go down as one the greatest wines ever from this legendary Château. 99/100

-- Quarin: Couleur sombre, intense, pourpre et belle. Grand nez aromatique, fin, très fruité, pur et quasi velouté. Remarquable entrée en bouche ample où le vin monte et se met à fondre, avec beaucoup d'éclat dans la saveur. Puissant et pourtant aérien dans sa densité, il s'achève long, suave et particulièrement enrobé. Une formidable expression de ce terroir qui ne cesse de progresser dans mes notes depuis 2005. Vous lirez prochainement une verticale comparative de 8 millésimes entre Latour, Pontet Canet et Pichon Baron où ce dernier fut brillant et le plus remarqué. 98/100

-- Jeb Dunnuck: The 2016 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is beauty and is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot that was brought up in 80% new French oak. Tasting like a hypothetical mix of the 2009 and 2010, its deep purple color is followed by a powerful yet sensationally pure bouquet of crème de cassis, blackberries, lead pencil shavings, and graphite, and is just about as quintessentially Pauillac as it gets. Full-bodied, fleshy and even a touch flamboyant, it has sweet tannins and a monster texture that coats the palate. Count me in as a huge fan. This fabulous wine will be relatively approachable in just 3-5 years but will age for 30 years or more. 97/100
