Lobenberg: 64 Prozent Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 Prozent Merlot, fünf Prozent Cabernet Franc, ein Prozent Petit Verdot. Wieder einmal ist der Erstwein mit einem so hohen Merlot-Anteil ausgestattet. Das letzte Mal war das 2009 der Fall. Die Merlot war perfekt bei Montrose. Und obwohl die Cabernet ja mit Sauvignon und Franc zusammen fast 70 Prozent ausmacht, ist die Merlot die Dominante in der Nase. Satte Schwarzkirsche, ein bisschen Mango an der Seite, Orangenzesten. Die Nase ist ein Pomerol oder ein ultrafeiner Saint-Émilion. Weniger diese hohe Würze, wie wir sie bei Montrose oder bei vielen anderen Saint-Estèphe kriegen, sondern unendlich fein, geschliffen und spielerisch, aber auch dicht und reich. Das Elegante obsiegt jedoch. Genialer Mund dazu. So eine unglaubliche Frische. Eine Salzigkeit wie ich sie bei keinen Wein so extrem hatte bei den letzten 10 Mustern. Wow, endet der Wein im Salz. Dieser Terroirbezug ist einfach irre. Und dieses Jahr ist der Dame de Montrose wirklich mal ein Zweitwein dieses Erstweins. Es ist die gleiche Liga, nur mit Turbolader. Ein grandioser Kick, eine total reife Frucht. Wahnsinniger Bums hintenraus und trotzdem feine, geschmeidige, reife Tannine. Ein rotfruchtiger Blockbuster. Trotz 14,5 Alkohol und immenser Reife strahlt der Wein ein sensationelle minzige Frische und eine geniale Kühle aus. Sicher der beste Montrose ever und vielleicht the wine of the vintage! 100+/100

Rich, inky and towering in concentration, the 2019 possesses off the charts intensity and tons of structure to back it up. Succulent black cherry, plum, tobacco, gravel and licorice infuse the 2019 with striking depth. The 2019 is not quite as opulent as some recent vintages, and that's a good thing. Readers will find a regal wine that marries elegance with power. Unforgettable. Tasted two times. 100/100

-- Decanter: A generous and abundant nose full of fruit and aromatic intensity followed by a gorgeous mouthfeel showcasing fruit density and concentration wrapped up in soft, velvety-smooth tannins. Just so much depth but also refinement here, it feels well made with just the right amount of fruit, toasty spice, tannins, freshness and acidity. The overall structure is gently framing all the elements - big and bold but quietly confident. The tannin impact is also enjoyable giving a feeling of approachability despite the long life ahead. Just superb - one of the best in 2019. A blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. 12% press wine. 60% new oak. Drinking window: 2029-2046. 100/100

-- Lisa Perrotti Brown: The 2019 Montrose is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it bursts with bold notes of stewed black plums, boysenberry preserves, blackcurrant jelly, and kirsch, plus touches of garrigue, lavender oil, and anise. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a lot of energy, with vibrant black fruits, firm, grainy tannins, and great tension, finishing very long and fragrant. 100/100

-- Jane Anson: Gorgeous rich colour here, a lovely wine full of pleasure. Chocolate, mocha, cappuccino, lots of toasted oak, great quality, with concentrated black fruits along with slate, crushed stone, smoked earth - measured, confident, delicious. I have tasted this a few times this year, and it has consistently been punching at the very top of its game. A no-brainer to recommend. 12% press wine, 47hl/ha yield, 60% new oak. 99/100

-- Gerstl: Max Gerstl: Wow, das ist Montrose, schon der Duft beeindruckt mich zutiefst, die Art und Weise wie die Terroirnoten ins Fruchtbild intergriert warden ist absolut faszinierend, das ergibt ein Duftbild von edler Schönheit, da ist Strahlkraft ohne Ende aber es wirkt unendlich fein, zart, eine geballte Ladung Raffinessen. Das ist der bekannt männliche Montose und doch ist er fein wie kaum je zuvor, alles wird getragen von einem mächtigen Tanningerüst das aber von seidener Feinheit ist, herrlich diese geniale Frische, das ist ein Traumwein, die kühle Stilistik steht ihm gut, da wird geballte Kraft zum Schweben gebracht, ein Geniestreich, wohl einer der allergrössten Montrose aller Zeiten, ganz sicher eine Klasse besser als der legendäre 1990er, also wie soll man den bewerten? 20+/20

In einer der besten Lagen der Appellation, hoch oben, mit wunderbarem Blick auf die Gironde liegt Château Montrose. 2006 fand ein Besitzerwechsel statt. Martin Bouygues, einer der erfolgreichsten Unternehmer Frankreichs, erwarb dieses legendäre Weingut für eine unbekannte Summe.
