Heiner Lobenberg über:
Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru 2008

93–95+
/100

Lobenberg: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 % Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Spät und vollreif bis zum 15. Oktober geerntet. Im Sommer drei grüne Lesen! Weinbergsarbeit wie nie zuvor bei Montrose. Kaum Botrytis oder Fäulnis im Weinberg, extreme Auslese dennoch. Schwarz-rubinroter Wein. 93-95+/100

Suckling über: Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru

-- Suckling: The purity and precision in this wine is very exciting. Medium to full body, firm and chewy tannins and a long finish of currant and spice. Black tea and bark too. Better in 2020 but beautiful now. Decant before serving. 95/100

Decanter über: Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru

-- Decanter: Montrose always takes its time, and this is still very much young and austere but with a commanding presence. It's a classically structured Montrose showing crushed slate, tobacco and bilberry and there's no question that it has plenty of life ahead of it. The tannins are among the most chewy on display so far, the fruit tucked in between the layers of acidity, the overall feel one of subdued power. Give it another few years before opening then settle in for the long haul. 95/100

Parker über: Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru

-- Parker: Tasted at the château, the 2008 Montrose is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot picked between 29 September and 15 October. It has a far superior bouquet compared to the underperforming 2006 with black fruit, minerals, fern and briary. It is very composed, almost understated, yet clearly with great potential. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a fine line of acidity, powerful for the finish but with impressive mineralité and tension on the persistence finish. It is quite an audacious 2008 and one of the finest wines of the vintage. Tasted September 2016. 94/100

Neal Martin über: Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru

-- Neal Martin: Tasted at the chateau. As indicated in my original tasting note, I have always felt that my sample from barrel was not representative. The nose takes some coaxing from the glass, but it eventually, perhaps reluctantly, reveals scents of blackberry, pomegranate, violet and a touch of cedar and fresh fig. Very well defined. The palate is tensile, very tight, fresh acidity underpinning sharp blackberry and bay leaf on the entry. Fine but sturdy tannins, very good persistency, real grip on the finish. This has certainly put on weight during its elevage and it is redolent of a scaled down version of the 1989. Whilst not a top-flight Montrose a la spellbinding 2009, this is still an impressive wine from Jean-Bernard Delmas. Drink 2014-2035. Tasted October 2010. 94/100

Galloni über: Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru

-- Galloni: The 2008 Montrose has a lifted perfumed bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, iris and limestone scents, nicely defined and opening with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm backbone, layers of cedar-tinged black fruit, spicebox and white pepper, leading to a perisistent, structured finish that probably needs another year or two soft. Impressive. 94/100

Wine Enthusiast über: Chateau Montrose 2eme Cru

-- Wine Enthusiast: Powerful yet still retaining a sense of restrained style, this wine is packed with ripe plum and sweet berry fruit flavors, laced with firm, dusty tannins. Acidity filters through the dense texture to give great freshness. 94/100

Montrose
