El Seque El Hondonico 2023

/100

The lieu-dit, or paraje, red 2023 El Hondonico was produced with Monastrell from the 13 hectares of vines they have in the village of Abanilla on deep alluvial sand and limestone gravel soils. It fermented in open-top vats and matured in 500-liter barrels and a new 2,500-liter Austrian oak foudre for 12 months. The oak, being new in this first vintage, marked the wine, but time in bottle has done it good and there's more freshness and red berry fruit at the forefront. There are ripe aromas of berries, aromatic herbs and plenty of spice and a touch of smoke. It has some dusty tannins and is ripe without excess (14.5% alcohol is customary). It's powerful, with clout, and finishes with some earthy tones. The oak is better integrated now and should diminish in the coming years. 3,168 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2025.

Suckling über: El Seque El Hondonico

This is perfumed, with aromas of red and blue fruit, underbrush, stems and fresh herbs. The palate is juicy and succulent, with focused tannins and precise, delineated fruit. From old head-pruned vines planted at 500 to 600 meters of altitude. Drink now.

Weingut über: El Seque El Hondonico

Alicante is a land of historic wines and rich viticultural heritage. In 1999, Juan Carlos López de Lacalle and Agapito Rico acquired the estate in the El Sequé vineyard site with the aim of restoring the value of Pinoso’s historic vineyards. The great diversity of soils soon led us to explore other distinctive sites such as El Hondónico, El Cofer, and Las Morachuelas. These vineyards are located in the Baetic Mountain Range, a mountainous region that stretches for over 600 km across southeastern Spain, from the Strait of Gibraltar to Cape Nao. This range was formed around 20 million years ago during the Neogene period, as a result of the collision between the Meso-Mediterranean plate and the Iberian Peninsula—creating the rich and varied soils we find today. At 500 meters above sea level, we benefit from a continental climate clearly marked by Mediterranean influence. Here we grow Monastrell, a variety that has been deeply rooted in this region for centuries. Our philosophy is based on staying true to tradition, caring for our natural surroundings through organic and regenerative viticulture, and relying on the strength of our family and team. These values together guide us in crafting wines that move and inspire us. The 2023 vintage is characterized, from a climatological perspective, as a dry year (276 l/m²), with levels below the annual average rainfall. The winter was dry and cold, with temperatures dropping to -4°C. The spring was wet, and the summer saw heat waves with temperature peaks exceeding 40°C in August.Wine sourced from vineyards located in the El Hondónico site, in the village of Abanilla. The soils are composed of deep sands with calcareous gravel and silica. The plot faces north, creating a cooler microclimate with reduced sun exposure. Fermented in open tanks with a short maceration to highlight the wine’s fresh and delicate character. Aged for one year in a 2,500-liter foudre.
