Luis Gutierez, Parkers Mann für Spanien, fasst den Jahrgang 2023 anhand von Alvaro Palacios Weingütern ganz im Westen und ganz im Osten, somit Landesübergreifend so zusammen: 2023 was an even more generous crop than 2022 … the wines have better balance, and it doesn't feel like a warm year at all. In fact, the wines feel more like they come from a cool year. It's a vintage that has a tendency toward reduction, not as much as 2020, but still reductive. But it's an elegant, stony reduction...The quality of the 2023s is stunning. There is a level of precision, cleanliness, symmetry and elegance that, if the end of the élevage and the bottling goes as expected, I must conclude that 2023 might be the finest vintage ... There might be other individual wines that reach higher peaks, but as an overall portfolio, the vintage 2023 represents the strongest collection ever produced.

Jeb Dunnuck zu 2022 über: PS Aalto Tempranillo

The winery’s top wine, the 2022 was first made in 2000 and is 100% Tempranillo/Tinto Fino. Powerfully built, yet elegant, it combines old-vine grapes planted 60 to 90 years ago from a selection of villages: La Horra-Roa, a hilly area with shallow slopes and reddish-brown soils, and La Aguilera, full of calcareous stone. Together, they offer this contrast of grace and intensity etched in tart red fruit, sweet vanilla, and remarkably refined tannins. The wine is aged 20 months in new French oak barrels and should age exceptionally well over the next 20-30 years.

Galloni zu 2022 über: PS Aalto Tempranillo

The 2022 PS, from Quintanilla de Arriba in Valladolid, Ribera del Duero, is defined by its oak aging. Coconut, vanilla, cedar and balsamic notes dominate the nose, joined by precise plum and herbal nuances. The palate is plush and creamy, with polished, worked tannins. It delivers layered fruit and oak. A modern classic for the region, marrying power with poise.

Suckling zu 2022 über: PS Aalto Tempranillo

A rich, deep and complex nose with plenty of wood spices, dark chocolate, fresh blackberries, violets and a touch of graphite. The highlight on the full-bodied palate is the quality and quantity of the tannins, which are massive but polished and dissolved. Really firm and long. Better from 2026, when the wood spices settle more.

Falstaff zu 2022 über: PS Aalto Tempranillo

Sehr dunkles Rubin, violette Reflexe. Sicheres Reifepotenzial.

S is short for Pagos Seleccionados and is the icon wine from Alto, made with grapes from individual parcels in La Aguilera, La Horra and Baños de Valdearados. It's one of the best young releases of this wine that I've tasted, with well-handled new French and a little American oak, plenty of structure and layers, polished tannins, blackberry and blueberry fruit flavours and a lovely interplay between wood sweetness and chalky minerality. Good now and will improve in bottle.

There's always a little bit more of everything in the PS compared with the regular Aalto. The 2022 PS, cropped from a very warm and dry year, is not only more powerful and tannic but also more balanced and elegant, in that Castilian rustic way. It comes in at 15% alcohol and packs a punch; it's generously oaked (it spent 20 months in new French oak barrels), creamy, toasty and smoky and leaves a dry, chalky sensation in the finish. This is very much for the fans of the style. It's powerful and concentrated with abundant oak. 35,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024.

Autumn began with unusually high temperatures and a marked lack of rainfall. It was not until late October that the first rains arrived, continuing regularly throughout November. Temperatures remained mild until the end of that month, when the first frosts were recorded. Several weather fronts brought significant rainfall during December, along with a gradual drop in temperatures. Although the beginning of winter was not particularly harsh, the season ended up being cold and dry. This pattern persisted until late March, when temperatures began to rise. Spring was mild and mostly dry. Frosts occurred in May, followed by storms at the end of the month, some of which extended sporadically into June. Summer was marked by intense drought and several heatwaves, posing challenges for crops and vineyard management. The grape harvest began in early September, under unstable weather conditions and with some rainfall during the picking period. 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) primarily from very old vines – 60 to 90 years old – from selected plots in La Horra and La Aguilera. The harvest was done by hand, in small boxes of 15 kilos that are thoroughly inspected, bunch by bunch, on the selection table. Ageing 21 months in new French oak barrels. Reddish-purple color. The nose reveals black fruit, spices, and soft notes of fine wood. On the palate, it offers a fresh sensation with good structure and volume, and a subtle, lingering finish.
