The top of the range I tasted was also from 2023, a warm and ripe year but more balanced and fresher than 2022. The 2023 PS, which stands for Pagos Seleccionados ('selected vineyards'), matured in new French oak barrels for 21 months. It has a creamy, spicy and smoky nose, which is intoxicating and showy. The textbook notes of black fruit, spices, ash and quality oak are there, as is the round and lush palate with abundant tannins that should make it long lived. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.54 and 5.33 grams of acidity. It was bottled in September 2025.

This has an aromatic nose of ripe dark berries, stones and a touch of citrus. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with a plush, linear expression of fruit, vibrancy and expressive oak. Drink now.

From much older Tempranillo vines, the 2023 Pagos Seleccionados is a knockout, exceptionally fresh and elegant, with bolts of lavender, licorice, and black and red fruit cradled in supple tannins. The producer used to age this wine for 30 months in new French oak but has reduced the time to 21 months, and it shows the balanced integration of that decision. These are just beautiful, age-worthy, complex wines across the board, this one made in small amounts, full-bodied and gorgeous.

S is short for Pagos Seleccionados and is the icon wine from Alto, made with grapes from individual parcels in La Aguilera, La Horra and Baños de Valdearados. It's one of the best young releases of this wine that I've tasted, with well-handled new French and a little American oak, plenty of structure and layers, polished tannins, blackberry and blueberry fruit flavours and a lovely interplay between wood sweetness and chalky minerality. Good now and will improve in bottle.

Galloni über: PS Aalto Tempranillo

The 2023 Aalto PS comes from Ribera del Duero and was aged in French oak barrels. Slightly mature and balsamic in profile, it opens with plum, bay leaf and camphor, layered with black fruit, balsamic herbs and fine oak. Complex and still shaped by its élevage, the house style’s trademark oak richness finds a darker expression in this vintage. Dry and lightly plush on the palate, it combines fine-grained tannins with greater energy than usual, delivering a more driven feel across the mouth. Black fruit, balsamic tones and oak linger through the finish, underscoring both the wine’s depth and its renewed vitality.

Verkostungsnotiz

Weingut über: PS Aalto Tempranillo

Autumn began with unusually high temperatures and a marked lack of rainfall. It was not until late October that the first rains arrived, continuing regularly throughout November. Temperatures remained mild until the end of that month, when the first frosts were recorded. Several weather fronts brought significant rainfall during December, along with a gradual drop in temperatures. Although the beginning of winter was not particularly harsh, the season ended up being cold and dry. This pattern persisted until late March, when temperatures began to rise. Spring was mild and mostly dry. Frosts occurred in May, followed by storms at the end of the month, some of which extended sporadically into June. Summer was marked by intense drought and several heatwaves, posing challenges for crops and vineyard management. The grape harvest began in early September, under unstable weather conditions and with some rainfall during the picking period. 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) primarily from very old vines – 60 to 90 years old – from selected plots in La Horra and La Aguilera. The harvest was done by hand, in small boxes of 15 kilos that are thoroughly inspected, bunch by bunch, on the selection table. Ageing 21 months in new French oak barrels. Reddish-purple color. The nose reveals black fruit, spices, and soft notes of fine wood. On the palate, it offers a fresh sensation with good structure and volume, and a subtle, lingering finish.
