Lobenberg: Bin 389 gilt als der kleine Grange. Er ist aber im Charakter etwas anders. Nicht so konzentriert und auf Langlebigkeit getrimmt. Dafür in der Jugend schmeichelnder und zugleich mindestens soviel Rhonestilistik wie neue Welt. Ein charmanter, beeriger Blockbuster mit guter Tanninstruktur und frischem Biss, der niemals langweilt, einfach DER Klassiker in der Penfolds-Welt. 94+/100

-- Suckling: Almost half/half, this is 51/49 cabernet shiraz from 2013 and shows strident blackberry, cassis, mocha and spice, some redder fruit nuances, chocolate and rough-sawn oak. The palate's sweetly fruited, tannins are chewy but not aggressive and the rich red to purple fruit flavors cover the mouth sweetly. Succulent, dusty tannin draw through the finish. This 389 is brazen and needs time's polish, best from 2021. 93/100

-- Parker: Composed of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz, the Cabernet / Shiraz Bin 389 has a deep garnet-purple color and a nose of cherry and blackberry with a cassis undercurrent plus touches of pencil lead, cedar and Mediterranean herbs. The palate delivers a structured style with a firm, taut backbone, great freshness and a long, iron ore-laced finish.

-- Galloni: Bright purple. Complex, smoke-tinged bouquet of ripe dark berries, pipe tobacco, violet and vanilla, with a smoky note building in the glass. Sweet and seamless but at the same time focused, offering intense cassis and bitter cherry flavors that open up and become sweeter on the back half. Taut and youthful in character, finishing sappy, focused and long, with sneaky tannins adding shape and closing grip.
