Lobenberg: Das Weingut gehört der Familie Pichet. Der Blend von 2019 enthält 52 Prozent Cabernet Sauvignon, 42 Prozent Merlot, drei Prozent Cabernet Franc und drei Prozent Petit Verdot. Gelesen wurde 2020 vom 9. bis zum 25. September. Die alten Reben – ein großer Teil über 100 Jahre alt – stehen auf Kiesböden mit Lehm im Untergrund. In Zeiten der Trockenheit haben wir also eine sehr gute Wasserversorgung. Haut-Bailly liegt auf dem höchsten Punkt der Appellation. Hier findet man deutlich mehr Lehm im Boden als bei anderen Top-Châteaus der Appellation wie Smith Haut Lafitte, wo deutlich mehr Kies zu finden ist. Die Böden machen Haut-Bailly immer so warm, reich und opulent. Und so ist der Wein aus dem besonders warmen und opulenten Jahr 2020 eine unglaubliche Wolke aus vornehmlich Schlehe und Schwarzkirsche, mit Veilchen und Rosenblättern unterlegt. Nicht wuchtig, aber opulent, sexy, rubenshaft. Unglaublich viel Charme und wollüstige Fülle. Die Augen ziehen sich beim Eintritt in den Mund zusammen, weil der Wein so unglaublich pikant ist. Er behält diese rubenshafte Fülle, die Wärme, den Charme. Gleichzeitig kriegt er Mineralität und rote Frucht dazu, Himbeere und Sauerkirsche darunter. Viel Gestein, Grafit, Pimentpfeffer, auch ein bisschen Minze. Extrem schick, extrem pikant zwischen den Polen der großen, reifen Wärme und der aufregenden Mineralität. Ein Wein mit einem astronomisch hohen Tannin-Level. Aber die Tannine sind butterweich, samtig, seidig. Alles spielt, alles ist blumig unterlegt. Ein genialer, rubenshafter Wein. Bis er diese ganze Opulenz verdaut hat, wird er sicherlich 10 bis 15 Jahre im Keller liegen müssen. Aber er wird ewig halten. Ein Monument des Weins. Genial! 100/100

-- Suckling: This has incredible power and drive with blackberry, black olive and graphite. It’s full-bodied, yet dynamic and agile, with so much polished and muscular tannin. Yet, it remains in harmony and balance. So much character. The head of the chateau calls it diabolical beauty. 25% less production than the 2019. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 42% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. 99-100/100

-- Jeb Dunnuck: Another wine I underrated on release, the 2020 Château Haut-Bailly is just about pure perfection, and whereas the 2018 is closer in style to the 2009, this plays things a little closer to its vest and is reminiscent of the 2010. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, it nevertheless cuts a focused, precise path across the palate and brings incredible purity in its darker fruits, smoked tobacco, cedar pencil, and Asian spice-driven aromas and flavors. The tannin quality here is off the charts, and this beauty has everything you could want from wine. It needs a solid 4-6 years (if not longer) to hit the early stages of its prime drinking window, and it's going to evolve for 50+ years. 99/100

-- Lisa Perrotti Brown: A blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Haut-Bailly is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a bit of swirling to coax out notions of black cherry compote, blackcurrant pastilles, and blackberry preserves, giving way to fragrant wafts of violets, dark chocolate, cardamom, and sassafras, with a touch of Indian spices. The medium to full-bodied palate is an exercise in poise, delivering tightly wrapped black fruit, exotic spice and floral layers, with a super-plush texture and seamless acidity, finishing very long with loads of mineral sparks and tons of energy. 99/100

Pure and focused, clean, lean and multifaceted, the flavours hit the palate then melt away, giving the floor to liquorice, cedar, tobacco and soft clove spices. I love the sleekness and the sense of seriousness that the 2020 has compared to the more 'look at me' 2019 at this point. The texture and depth make this wine, with vertical layers and excellent acidity. A profound wine. 97/100

-- Parker: A blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Haut-Bailly was harvested from the 9th to 25th of September. It has an alcohol of 14.3%. Deep purple-black in color, it prances out of the glass with naturally beautiful notions of fresh black cherries, violets, mulberries and boysenberries, giving way to hints of redcurrant jelly, star anise, tilled soil and menthol. The medium to full-bodied palate is delicately crafted with velvety/grainy tannins and fantastic freshness framing the perfumed red and black berry layers, finishing on a lingering fragrant-earth note. 96-98+/100

Gerstl über: Chateau Haut Bailly

-- Gerstl: Haut-Bailly ist zu einer grossen Persönlichkeit herangereift, schon der Duft versetzt mich ins Staunen, das ist Noblesse pur, die absolute Präzision, ein sublimes, die Sinne berauschendes Parfüm, ich könne Stunden mit diesem Duft verbringen, immer wieder neue Details erhaschen, das berührt die Seele. Ich muss zuerst einmal einfach geniessen, was da passiert, das berührt mich zutiefst, das ist absoluter Hochgenuss, uneingeschränktes Trinkvergnügen und da ist auch viel Tiefgang, da ist Struktur, der klassische Kern, der Wein besitzt eine innere Grösse, die man ohne genaue Betrachtung nicht erkennen würde. Auf frühere Jahrgänge bezogen ist da die Erotik eines 82ers oder 90ers unterlegt mit dem Tiefgang eines 86ers oder 88ers. 20/20

Bis vor kurzer Zeit wurde es von seinem Sohn Jean bewirtschaftet, dem dann seine Enkelin Véronique folgte, die sich ebenfalls dem traditionellen Stil der Weinbereitung verpflichtet fühlt. Neuer Wind und der Sprung ins qualitative Oberhaus kam aber erst mit der Übernahme durch die Enkelin Veronique.
