Aalto Tempranillo 2023
/100

The eponymous red 2023 Aalto has an intoxicating nose of expensive oak, toast, smoke and spices over a core of ripe berry fruit. It has a little less ripeness than in previous years, coming in at 14.5% alcohol and keeping a pH of 3.58 and 5.43 grams of acidity. It's powerful and concentrated, with very fine tannins and very good balance. It should develop nicely in bottle. It's an old-vine Tempranillo cuvée matured in French and American oak barrels for 17 months. 330,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2025.

Suckling über: Aalto Tempranillo
Dark and expressive, with preserved cherries, plums and a slightly pruny character. Full-bodied and generous, with ample fruit and round, plush tannins. Drink or hold.

Galloni über: Aalto Tempranillo
Sourced from different vineyards across Ribera del Duero, the 2023 Tempranillo was aged for up to 16 months in barrels, 60% American oak and the remainder French, with one-third new. Fine oak frames a fruit profile that moves between freshness and liqueur-like ripeness, joined by flowers, wild herbs and a subtle toasted note. The palate tells a different story: agile and silky, with delicate tannins, a touch of chalky grip and juicy freshness that adds dimension. In a house style often shaped by richness and élevage, the 2023 vintage brings unusual energy and precision. Tempranillo remains a benchmark of modern Ribera.

Jeb Dunnuck über: Aalto Tempranillo
From older Tempranillo vines, but not quite as old as the Pagos Seleccionados, the 2023 is velvety in spicy blue fruit that’s fresh and lively, with balanced acidity and ripeness. Medium to full-bodied, it spent 17 months in barrel, developing into a complex red with gusto and grace that’s lovely to drink.

Tim Atkin über: Aalto Tempranillo
Antonio Moral is a master blender, using grapes from nine different villages in Burgos, Valladolid and Soria to produce this dense, ambitious Tempranillo. Aged in 40% new French and 40% American oak, it has inky depths, plenty of power and concentration, blackberry, fig and liquorice flavours and appealing wood spices. It's a bold wine, but there’s some underlying freshness and focus here too.

Autumn began with unusually high temperatures and a marked lack of rainfall. It was not until late October that the first rains arrived, continuing regularly throughout November. Temperatures remained mild until the end of that month, when the first frosts were recorded. Several weather fronts brought significant rainfall during December, along with a gradual drop in temperatures. Although the beginning of winter was not particularly harsh, the season ended up being cold and dry. This pattern persisted until late March, when temperatures began to rise. Spring was mild and mostly dry. Frosts occurred in May, followed by storms at the end of the month, some of which extended sporadically into June. Summer was marked by intense drought and several heatwaves. The grape harvest began in early September, under unstable weather conditions and with some rainfall during the picking period. 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) primarily from very old vines – 40 to 80 years old – from nine different villages in the province of Burgos and Valladolid. The harvest was done by hand, in small boxes of 15 kilos that are thoroughly inspected, bunch by bunch, on the selection table. Ageing 17 months in French and American oak barrels. With a deep cherry-red color, Aalto 2023 offers an intense aromatic profile of red fruits and spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet fresh, with a long and silky finish.
