Lobenberg: Traditionell wurde in allen Weinbergen der Rioja Alaveza neben ca. 90 % Tempranillo auch ca. 10 % Viura angebaut. Dem Qualitätsbestreben von Juan Carlos war dies ein Dorn im Auge. Wollte er doch die besten roten Riojas keltern, und Viura trägt nicht unbedingt zur Tiefe und Konzentration bei. So wurde die Viura-Ernte komplett verkauft. Juan Carlos, provoziert von den legendären Weißen von Marques de Murrieta und Riscal, hat sich nun entschlossen, diese Trauben selber zu keltern. Das Ergebnis ist mehr als grandios. Ein voller Weißwein mit deutlichem, aber sehr gut integriertem Holzeinsatz, der zur absoluten Spitze Südeuropas gehört. Frisch gehackte Kräuter, dezente Honignoten, weißer Cassis und ultrafein balanciertes Tannin. Komplex, dicht, aber auch spielerisch. Nach wenigen Stunden schmilzt das Tannin hinweg und das Holz ist nur noch im langen Nachhall zu erahnen. Ein spannender Wein in der Jugend, ein großer Wein ab 10 Jahren Lagerung aufwärts!

Parker über: Rioja Vinas de Gain Blanco

-- Parker: The only white produced here is the 2020 Viñas de Gaín Blanco, which is balsamic and aromatic, floral and herbaceous, from a fresher and more elegant vintage. It fermented with some skins to give it complexity and volume, but he has reduced the time the wine is in contact with the skins, and this year, the wine finished part of the fermentation in used 600-liter demi-muids and was kept in stainless steel with lees for two years. They have stopped racking the white, and they feel it keeps a livelier character. It has the profile of the traditional Rioja whites with a modern twist, cleaner, more focused and precise. It has a moderate 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.31 and 6.05 grams of sugar, fresh and vibrant. It's beautiful, possibly the best year for the white and a year they think was better for the white than for the reds. Bravo! 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022. 94/100

-- Tim Atkin: Something of a rarity at Artadi - it's the bodega's only white wine - this is now a varietal Viura that dispensed with Malvasía in 2020. Textured and floral, it marries aromas of fennel and wild thyme with a palate that's very lightly wooded, textured yet refreshing, with flavours of lemongrass and citrus and a hint of nutmeg spice.
