Lobenberg: Aus einem der besten und kühlsten Crus der Rioja, El Vardallo. Nur 1500 Flaschen Gesamtproduktion bei einer Fläche von 1,18 ha, unglaublich niedriger Ertrag, ca. 120 Jahre alte Reben. Direkt nach der Reblauskatastrophe auf uralten Wurzeln gepflanzt. Marcos Eguren musste sehr lange nach diesem Weinberg suchen. Hier gibt es ca. 4,4 % weiße Trauben, diese scheint man im unendlich komplexen Nasenbild fühlen zu können. Er strahlt etwas Geheimnisvolles, fast Mystisches aus. Eine unglaublich erhabene Mineralik strahlt aus ihm, von der Sonne aufgeheizter Kiesel. Dann verblüfft er am Gaumen mit seiner Kühle und Raffinesse, er ist perfekt gezeichnet. Ein Rioja der am Gaumen umher mäandert, sich in neuen Facetten spiegelt. Ein großer, großer Rioja! Eine geniale Interpretation von Zeit und Raum, vor allem dieses Bereichs der Rioja, der Heimat der Familie Eguren. Hier sind alle Fäden für ein emotionales Elixir zusammengeführt worden, das ein Geschenk der Natur, gleichzeitig aber auch die ideale Erfüllung eines einmaligen Erbes ist. 100+/100

-- Tim Atkin: Planted in 1904, the Mágico parcel is a field blend of mostly Tempranillo, with 20% Garnacha and lesser amounts of Graciano, Alicante Bouschet and various white varieties within theEl Bardallo cru. It's the most fragrant and ethereal of the Egurens' wines, with very subtle, scented oak, pomegranate, raspberry and pink grapefruit flavours, filigree tannins and remarkable length. 2025-40 98/100

-- Galloni: Mágico translates to 'enchanted' or 'magical' in Spanish, reflecting the quality of the location of this special vineyard—a tiny shoulder on the Toñoño mount, planted over 100 years ago. The 2020 Mágico is a faithful blend of 65% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 4.4% Calagraño, 3.2% Turruntés, 2.8% Viura, 2.5% Graciano, 1% Petit Bouschet and 1.1% other varieties hailing from Barranco Bardallo, San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Aged for 26 months in French oak barrels, this purplish wine unfolds with fruity notes of raspberry, watermelon, elder and sweetbrier, soaring over a cedar core with hints of dried flowers and cotton candy. Dry, compact and chalky, the juicy and polished tannins lead to a refreshing, mouthwatering, lasting finish. Intense and nuanced, this Sonsierra wine seems to be from another planet—one where magic occurs in reality.

-- Penin: Klar definierte Aromen und komplex. Die Farbe ist kirschrot mit granatrotem Sau. In der Nase komplex, ausdrucksvoll, würzig, mineralisch und balsamisch. Buschwaldkräuter und Schokolade. Im Mund elegant, voll, lang und nachhaltig.

Suckling über: Magico

-- Suckling: Such a spicy nose with notes of citrus, anise, black pepper and grapefruit. Ultra-complex, and there is something ethereal as well, with crushed flowers and a balsamic edge. Medium- to full-bodied with a zesty quality to the center palate that surprises you. Tannins are firm and reactive. Super long with a peppery finish. From a vineyard planted around 1905 with seven identified varieties and a few more not yet identified. The magic here is that this is not really full, but the energy is impressive. Drink or hold.

Parker über: Magico

-- Parker: The 2020 Mágico was produced with 65% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 4.4% Calagraño, 3.2% Turruntés, 2.8 % Viura, 2.5% Graciano, 1.1% other reds and white grapes and 1% Petit Bouschet, all from one single vineyard, El Vardallo (others write Bardallo), located in the higher part of San Vicente de la Sonsierra planted with the typical field blend at the time in the early 20th century after phylloxera. The hand-destemmed grapes fermented in oak vats, all the varieties together except the Garnacha. Malolactic was in barrels, 500- and 225-liter ones, where the wine matured. It is aromatic and floral, with finesse, red fruit, and it's quite fresh in the context of the wines from 2020. It’s a gentler wine with the complexity and nuance of the dozen varieties used. A superb result for a year like 2020. 2,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2023. 96/100
