Caracol dos Profetas Fazendas da Areia
The 2023 Caracol dos Profetas Vinho do P. Santo Fazendas da Areia was produced with grapes from old vines of the obscure Caracol variety planted on a small plot of very sandy calcareous soils close to the sea. It fermented in small stainless steel vats and oak barrels and matured in well-seasoned 228-liter French oak barrels for 11 months. It has a deeper golden color than their regular Caracol and a deeper nose, with nuttier notes, spicier and with a smoky and salty twist. It's complex and nuanced, intriguing, even more reminiscent of an unfortified Palomino from the Sherry region in Spain, sultry and mineral. It has a medium-bodied palate with contained ripeness, 12.3% alcohol, very good freshness and acidity (pH 3.24 and 6.38 grams of acidity), coming through as balanced and clean, tasty, very long and with a chalky and dry texture and a salty and bitter twist in the finish. 2,974 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024.,,
