Lobenberg: Auf 550 Metern in Labastida stehende uralte Reben. Nur 0,4 Hektar auf mit Kreide und Kalkstein gemischter Lehmboden, gute Voraussetzungen für Powerweine. Bio. Gemischter Satz mit Schwerpunkt Viura. Akribische Handarbeit im Weinberg, Handlese bei der Ernte und dann Ganztraubenpresse und ungeklärte spontane Fermentation im offenen Barrique. 2 Jahre Ausbau auf der Feinhefe ohne Batonage im 500 Liter Tonneau, gebrauchtes Holz. Unfiltrierte Abfüllung und so gut wie kein Schwefel. Großramige Nase, erhaben, dominant aber nicht fett. Einfach großer Viura-Wein, erinnert an Frontonios Top-Weine. Viura (Macabeo in Calatayud genannt) kann soooo groß sein wenn Terroir, Rebalter und Bearbeitung das ermöglichen, dann ist die Viura mit der Godello und Albarinho die dritte weiße Weltklasse-Rebe in Spanien. Der Mund zeigt geniale Frische, einem Teammitglied entfuhr der Satz 'wie Riesling'. Aber natürlich keine Zitrusfrüchte hier, eher satte, salzige, etwas scharfe Mineralik. Viel Stein, Feuerstein, Kalk und Kreide, Quitte, etwas weißer Pfirsich und gesalzene Reneklode mit einem kleinen Honigschwänzchen. Erhabener großer Rioja mit sehr großem Alterungspotenzial. 97-98/100

Parker über: Challao Blanco

-- Parker: The new white 2020 Challao Blanco is a classical blend of 60% Viura, 20% Garnacha Blanca and 10% each Palomino and Calagraño from one vineyard planted in 1990 in the lieu-dit Sauco in the northeast of Labastida bordering vineyards on white silt and limestone soils. The juice fermented in a 500-liter oak barrel where it matured for 23 months and was kept in bottle before it was released. It feels like an old-style white Rioja fermented and matured in oak, with spice and smoke. It has 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.3 after malolactic and comes through as very vertical and fine-boned. It keeps very good acidity with the pungent limestone sensation and tastiness. There was rain close to the harvest, so the grapes had enough water to finish ripening without dropping in acidity. It has very good balance, elegance and persistence, a modern view of the traditional whites, with aging potential. Only 600 bottles and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in November 2022. 95/100

Galloni über: Challao Blanco

-- Galloni: The 2020 Blanco Challao is a blend of 70% Viura with the remainder comprising Garnacha Blanca, Malvasía and Palomino from old vines planted in Labastida, Rioja Alavesa. After undergoing a 24-month aging process in foudres, it exhibits a yellow hue and enticing aromas that evoke fennel and wild herbs intertwined with chamomile, honey, and green apple notes, offering a complex and attractive palate. Dry and rich, it presents a fairly concentrated and chalky mouthfeel characteristic of the Sonsierra, culminating in a long-lasting, oaky finish. This white wine is a delightful treat.

-- Weingut: 2020 was a warm year with moderate precipitation levels of 550 mm. We suffered hail in April, which reduced our production by 10%. The harvest came forward slightly. Good quality fruit with healthy fermentations thanks to the healthy conditions of the vineyard during the vegetative cycle. 0.4 hectares that we harvested for the first time in this vintage. Located in the town of Labastida, this plot has a notable presence of calcium carbonate in its predominantly clay soils. The age of its vineyard allows for balanced production and good health in normal years, as well as good resistance in difficult years, due to its age. Direct press with spontaneous fermentation in barrels. Aged for two years in 500-liter French oak barrels, without pumping over in fermentation or batonages in aging.
