Oxydatifs 40 Ans d'Age Vin Doux Naturel
-- Jancis Robinson: The difficulty with writing about a wine like this is that it's so complex, there is so much there, the flavours and aromas keep emerging, whirling, whorling, rising and falling, that the tasting note either becomes a shopping list of flavours or a metaphor to snapshot capture the essence of the wine. I'll give you the shopping list, although it's more like a kaleidoscope in the mouth: cherry, cigar, ginger snaps, smoked pecans, marmalade, marmelo. Quince and candied peel. Dried apricots. Incredible texture, scrunched silk and tissue paper on stone. Masses of souk spices and pomegranate and oh my god this just goes on and on and on. No end in sight… And I'll give you the metaphor: watch an African sunrise. Even if it's on YouTube. But if you've ever actually sat on a rock, just before dawn – the smell of last-night's heat and campfire, today's cold-dawn dust and acacia trees held still in the milk-blue pause before the light breaks the horizon – you will know exactly what this wine is like. 19,5/20
