Redoma Tinto DOC
-- Weingut: Redoma tinto is Niepoort’s original Douro wine, first released in 1991. It is like Douro: 'extreme, with a rigorous character'. Old north-facing vineyards from Quinta de Nápoles and Pinhão Valley form the basis of Redoma. Its main varieties are Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca. The 2020 growing year was very heterogeneous. A rainy winter was followed by a quite moderate spring, providing favourable conditions for the vines’ growth. On the other hand, the month of June was relatively cool and slowed down the growth cycle. July brought very high temperatures (the hottest since 1931), with three heat waves which reduced the yields somewhat. Harvesting began in the first weeks of August in the hottest areas and concluded in the higher-lying slopes at the end of September. Forgoing any special sorting process, 100% whole bunches were transferred into stainless steel lagares equipped with mechanised stomping devices, where they macerated for a short period of time. Lastly the wine went through malolactic fermentation in old wooden barrels where it also matured for approximately 22 months. The Redoma Tinto 2020 is a Niepoort classic which reflects the elegance, structure, and acidity that only a region as diverse as the Douro Valley can express. A beautifully concentrated ruby red appearance displays some violet glints when the wine is swirled. The nose is delicate, with notes of aromatic herbs, floral aromas, and hints of fruits of the forest which are complemented by smoky nuances, adding further complexity and character. On the palate, this wine offers body and roundness as well as a piquant, linear, and incredibly well-balanced profile. Its outstanding acidity provides a long, expressive finish and promises longevity.
