Lobenberg: 2016 verzeichnete Ridge endlich wieder durchschnittliche Regenmengen zum Jahresbeginn. Dem standen vier sehr warme und viel zu trockene Jahre bevor. Einigermaßen normal fielen daher 2016 die Erträge aus. Die Feuchtigkeit zu Beginn des Jahres sorgte für ausreichend Nährstoffzufuhr der Reben und endete dann wie vorbestellt im Mai. Der bilderbuchhafte Sommer sorgte für gute Ausreifung der Trauben. Ridge brachte die letzten Trauben für den Monte Bello Mitte Oktober ein. Monte Bello ist eine Assemblage aus 37 Lots. Dabei wurde unabhängig von Herkunft und Rebsorte letztlich fassweise cuvéetiert (Festlegung der Fässer für den Monte Bello und für den Zweitwein 'Estate'), bis das bestmögliche Ergebnis erreicht wurde. Winemaker Eric Baugher vergleicht 2016 mit dem 1999er Jahrgang. Die elegante Struktur der endlich mal wieder nicht hyperkonzentrierten Cabernet-Trauben, das große Lagerungspotenzial und die enorme Komplexität veranlassen ihn zu diesem Vergleich. Welch großartiger Wein und ein exzellentes Vermächtnis. Der letzte von Paul Draper begleitete Jahrgang nach über 45-jähriger Verantwortung, nun ist David Almeida der Boss. Kalter Rauch und Asche liegt auf Schwarzkirsche, schwarzer Johannisbeere und unsüßer Brombeere. Schwarze Schlehe, Grafit. Eine mega-elegante Nase, irgendwo zwischen Chave Hermitage und Evangile... Ausone kommt mir auch in die Erinnerung. Rhône trifft Pomerol mit einem Touch Saint Emilion. Reif und dabei unsüß, eher verspielt und tänzelnd, so weit weg von der häufigen Blaubeer-Cassis-Maulbeere. 2016 wird ein unsterblicher, ganz großer Jahrgang, er erinnert mich an meinen Arbeitsbeginn, 1991. Auch 1999 und 2001 war wieder ähnlich spektakulär. Nochmal ganz deutlich: ultrafein, europäisch, unsterblich in seiner feinen Art. Ein Hammer in traumhaft feiner Frucht, geschliffenstem Tannin und Finesse. Ein Wein für traumhafte Jugend und für mindestens 50 Jahre Lagerung. 100/100

-- Galloni: One of the highlights in this tasting, the 2016 Monte Bello has turned out just as beautifully as I hoped it would. Soaring aromatics, bright acids and mid-weight structure give the 2016 a super-classic feel. Clearly, the 2016 is very primary today, with plenty of bright red and purplish berry fruit. More than that, though, the 2016 pulses with energy and simply exceptional balance. Don't miss it! 98/100

-- Jeb Dunnuck: Bottled in March of 2018 and a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello offers a more streamlined, elegant, and ultra-classic style compared to the 2014 and 2015, which are slightly bigger, richer wines. Boasting a deep purple color and beautiful purity in its crème de cassis, blueberry, white flowers, and vanilla bean, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, silky tannins, and perfect balance. It doesn’t have the sheer depth of fruit of some of the blockbuster years, yet makes up for it with its incredible purity, poise, and balance. Relatively approachable for a Monte Bello, it’s still going to see its 30th birthday in fine form. 97/100

Parker über: Monte Bello

-- Parker: The 2016 Monte Bello is stunning, bursting from the glass with aromas of crushed currants, plums, charcoal, sweet spices, black truffle and rich soil. On the palate, it's full-bodied, immensely deep and very concentrated, with an ample core of dark fruit that almost entirely conceals its rich chassis of tannin. The finish is long, tensile and chalky. Eric Baugher observes that 2016 was a drought year but that the vines were less stressed than in 2015, thanks to Spring precipitation, and it wasn't necessary to irrigate. Summer saw wild temperature swings, and though it was below average in summation, some days were very warm. The final Monte Bello blend contains 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc, which represents a slight change from when I tasted it a year ago, though its profile remains very much the same. The 2016 checks in at 13.8% alcohol and pH 3.49. Cellar it for a decade and follow it for another three. 96-98+

-- Jancis Robinson: Very dark crimson. Real structure and much more backward than the 2018. Should prove a great long-distance runner. One of the biggest, boldest of these Monte Bellos. Quite dry on the end at the moment. But very long too. Pretty stunning! 13.7% 18,5++/20

Winzer über: Monte Bello

-- Winzer: 'There are many similarities between this vintage and 1999. In that vintage, zinfandel had cabernet like structure and cabernet was more elegant and approachable like zinfandel. We relied upon press wine that year to give the Monte Bello additional tannins, and it has aged extremely well. The 2016’s components are already starting off with greater tannin structure than 1999 and will likely not require any further press wine additions once the assemblage is made. It promises to be an exciting assemblage tasting-one that will again produce a wine with impeccable aging potential and wonderful complexity expressing the unique character of our limestone soils and mountain vineyards.'
