Heiner Lobenberg über:
Douro Red Reserva DOC 2016

96
/100

Lobenberg: Deutlich feiner und eleganter als der normale Rotwein der Noval. Würzig und immens lange Reserva. Nicht dramatisch besser aber hintergründiger. 96/100

Parker über: Douro Red Reserva DOC

-- Parker: The 2016 Reserva, rebranded from the former Estate Tinto with just Quinta do Noval on the label, is a blend of 60% Touriga Nacional, 25% Touriga Franca and various others, all aged for ten months in French oak of varying ages (only 35% new). It comes in at 14% alcohol. A bit richer than the 2015 (also reviewed as the Tinto, the estate red), while maintaining the same tannic structure and fresh feel, this is also nicely textured with a wave of velvet up front. It maintains sophisticated and gorgeous mid-palate finesse too. This has the potential to be special, one of the best I've seen in the brand, if not the best table wine from Noval. To me, this has a bit better balance than the 2015. Carlos Agrellos said he preferred it, and he's right—if only by a little. The competition will be fierce over the next couple of decades, and that conclusion may change on these very powerful and very young wines. It is worth leaning up on this beauty's evaluation just now, but take note—that is for unrealized potential, and this was only in bottle for about two weeks when seen. It should age very well, by the way, but let's start here. At some point, it will need reevaluation. 95/100

Decanter über: Douro Red Reserva DOC

-- Decanter: Ideal ripening conditions produced classic structure and freshness in this 2016. With 12% old field-blend grapes and 3% of Tinto Cão, this flagship wine (now re-badged as Reserva) reveals plenty of complexity, depth and finesse, with emphatic red fruits and black berries and currants. It has fine, mineral tannins and persistent acidity. Floral notes, cedar and spices lend lift to the long finish. A beautifully crafted blend. 35% new oak. 95/100

Jeb Dunnuck über: Douro Red Reserva DOC

-- Jeb Dunnuck: The 2016 Reserva is a Touriga Nacional-dominated blend that includes a mix of other permitted varieties, all of which was brought up in 35% new French oak. It offers a more exotic, complex bouquet of mulled red and blue fruits, scorched earth, graphite, and spring flowers that (like the Touriga Nacional) opens up beautifully with time in the glass. Rich and structured on the palate, with a full-bodied mouthfeel, good acidity and building tannins, it’s another serious, age-worthy red from this estate that’s loaded with potential. Give bottles 3-4 years and enjoy over the following 15+. 93/100

Suckling über: Douro Red Reserva DOC

-- Suckling: There’s a rich array of ripe dark berries on the palate with bold, chewy tannins. Would be better tackled after some time to mellow in bottle. Try from 2024. 93/100

Wine Spectator über: Douro Red Reserva DOC

-- Wine Spectator: Blackberry and red plum flavors are concentrated and graceful in this generous red, with accents of iron, bay leaf and savory spice imparting definition through the structured finish. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Cão. Drink now through 2026. 1,083 cases made. 93/100
