Lobenberg: Tiefgründigere Böden mit etwas höheren Braunerde-Anteile, dazu eine leichte Neigung an einer Stelle, die schon Richtung Gemarkung Meursault läuft. Insgesamt ist Champans also mehr auf Power und Druck ausgerichtet, aber natürlich weiß man bei d’Angerville auch hier die Finesse zu bewahren. Champans wirkt neben den sehr ätherischen, luftigen Taillepieds und Caillerets oft erdiger, gesetzter, horizontaler. Champans hat etwas mehr Fülle und Expresivität als der sehr steinige Taillepieds, der nur geradeaus läuft. Champans geht auch in 2022 etwas mehr zur Erde als zur Frucht, im Gegensatz zu Fremiets, Angles und Caillerets, die wahre Fruchtexplosionen sind in diesem Jahr. Gesüßter Schwarztee und dunkle Waldbeeren, gemischt mit etwas Goudron und Graphitmineral. Ein verführerischer Touch dunkler Himbeere spielt mit rein. Der Mund ist wahnsinnig strukturiert, die Tannine sind etwas erdiger und fester als in den traumtänzerisch zarten anderen Crus. Brombeere und lehmige-teeige Noten dominieren.

Decanter über: Volnay Premier Cru Champans

-- Decanter: This monumental wine is, as always, a reference for the appellation. In 2022, there is a lovely density of plum and blackberry fruit with spice and earth notes. The texture is plump, velvety and long, with supple tannins supporting the wine without adding astringency. D'Angerville destems and gave the grapes a cold soak before fermentation on native yeasts and ageing in cask (mainly used) to preserve the limpid purity of the fruit. Give this wine five years before opening, and it should continue to improve for at least 30 years beyond that. 96/100

Tim Atkin über: Volnay Premier Cru Champans

-- Tim Atkin: This is enticingly rustic on the nose with red and black forest berries, fireplace embers and a hint of game. The tannins are powder-fine, and there are some real acidic peps here. This has more flesh on the bones than some of the other Volnay Premier Crus as this vineyard is more clay dominant. 95/!00

Galloni über: Volnay Premier Cru Champans

-- Galloni: The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a pixelated bouquet with that mélange of red and black fruit that I noticed before. It's perfumed with hints of potpourri and lovely sous-bois/mossy scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with a little crunch on the entry. It's a more structured Champans than I am accustomed to; perhaps the tannins are a bit firmer and less silky in texture at the moment. This will need more time to knit together than d'Angerville's other cuvées. 94/100

Jancis Robinson über: Volnay Premier Cru Champans

-- Jancis Robinson: Tank sample. Bright, medium-dense crimson. Hint of mushrooms on the nose. Lots of substance here. Very glorious fruit on the palate completely distracts from the structure lurking underneath. A substantial, spicy wine that most closely conforms to the Platonic ideal of ‘red burgundy’. Really quite heady! But with a definite framework. Fuller and meatier than the Taille Pieds. And so long! 18/20

-- Parker: The 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Champans offers up aromas of dark berries, licorice, grilled squab, spices and vine smoke, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered palate with a sweet core of fruit framed by powdery tannins that assert themselves on the discreetly carnal finish. 91-93/100
