Lobenberg: Der Chante Le Merle ist so etwas wie die klassische Interpretation eines Chateauneufs. Wir haben hier also viel Grenache und einen Ausbau in großen Eichenfässern und etwas Demi-Muids für bis zu 18 Monate. Eine Selektion der Reben von 80 bis zu 90 Jahren, also echte Vieilles Vignes. Das duftet zart und intensiv nach Schlehe und roten Beeren. Dann kommt etwas Bleistift und auch weiße Blüten. Am Gaumen geht es geschliffen weiter, kräftiges Tannin, weiche Säure, aber auch eine feine und ausgewogene Frucht. Das braucht Zeit im Glas oder besser noch auf der Flasche. Bei aller Komplexität bleibt dieser Chateauneuf trinkig. 96-97/100

-- Parker: I was blown away by the prodigious fruit in the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes. Quantities are only maybe half of the 2016, so you can imagine how concentrated and rich this baby is. Waves of raspberry and cherry fruit are seductive on the nose, then crash over the palate with a tsunami of concentration and power. If time in the cellar can coax some additional elegance out of the wine, it could be a candidate for perfection. 97-99/100

-- Jeb Dunnuck: More traditional notes of sandalwood, garrigue, pepper, and assorted red and black fruits emerge from the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes. It’s the normal blend of mostly Grenache with small amounts of Syrah and Mourvèdre, fermented with no destemming and aged mostly in foudre. With full body, a layered, balanced texture, and moderate tannins, it’s going to be relatively approachable on release yet have two decades of overall longevity. 94-96/100

-- Galloni: Brilliant ruby-red. Ripe black raspberry and cherry scents are accompanied by suggestions of candied licorice, lavender and garrigue. Sappy and broad in the mouth, offering concentrated bitter cherry, boysenberry and fruitcake flavors that steadily become sweeter with air. Clings with strong tenacity on the youthfully chewy finish, which features well-knit tannins and resonating cherry and floral notes. 94-95/100
