From the three vintages of sparkling Txakoli I tasted, the 2020 Izar-Leku was the older, deeper-colored and more oxidative and developed, nuanced and characterful one, the vintage with more complexity and stronger personality, with notes of baked apples and some cereals and yeasts. The shape of the cork seemed to suggest that the wine had been disgorged a while ago, and the wine seems to have become polished and settled in bottle. It has abundant, small bubbles, a fresh palate with complex flavors and notable acidity and a salty twist in the finish. This is extra brut, with four grams of residual sugar, but it finished dry and balanced. It was a warm year overall, featuring a wet first half, with autumn and winter fronts, followed by a notably dry and hot second half highlighted by severe summer heat waves exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. Ultimately, the annual precipitation balanced out to around 1,150 liters, placing it close to or slightly below the historical average for Getaria. They disgorged this wine in March 2024, after 34 months in bottle with the lees, and produced 16,000 bottles.
