Lobenberg: Wow, was für eine satte Nase. Süßherbe Kirsche, süße Brombeere, ein Hauch Cassis untermalt von tiefer Würze mit Piment, einem Hauch Zimt, Nelke, schwarzem Pfeffer und ganz dezent auch etwas Bitterschokolade. Am Gaumen voluminös, mit zupackenden aber feinen Tanninen und schöner Frische, die von der rassigen Säurestruktur kommt. Wirklich saftig und erfrischend am Gaumen in Sauerkirsche und nicht süßen Waldbeeren. Durch die grandiose Säurefrische wirkt der Syrah deutlich knackiger, als die süßwürzige Nase es erwarten ließe. Geradezu eine tänzerische Rasse zeigend bis in den langanhaltenden Abgang, in dem die saftige Frucht von Piment und Pfeffer begleitet wird. 94+/100

-- Galloni: The 2018 Syrah Biodynamic was hand-sorted before being transferred into Nomblot concrete tanks for alcoholic fermentation, where 30% of the grapes are left whole bunch, the berries on stalks crushed to avoid carbonic fermentation at the bottom of the tank. The remaining 70% of grapes are destemmed. The wine takes two or three minutes to find its groove, then offers detailed blackberry, raspberry preserve, clove and wild fennel aromas, hints of bilberry jam emerging with continued aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, saturated tannins and plenty of dusky black fruit mixed with garam masala and bay leaf. Beautifully defined on the finish. Stunning. 95/100

-- Decanter: Super quality for the price for this delicious biodynamic field blend of Syrah. Gorgeous aromas leap from the glass: smoky, earthy rooibos tea, warm lavender and black cherry. The complex, meaty, silky-smooth palate has fine gravelly tannins and notes of leather, blood, rose and aniseed, with a seaweed note on the long, crisp finish. The fruit (30% crushed with stems) is fermented in concrete, with malo done in old casks and foudres. It is then aged 14 months in oak, three months in steel and a further eight in bottle before release. 95/100

-- Tim Atkin: The little brother to the Reserve Red in some ways - although that is not to damn it with faint praise - this comes from four blocks on the farm and has a lovely combination of clove, bramble and red cherry flavours, with savoury tannins, some cooked meat undertones and perfume to spare. 2022-29 93/100

-- Parker: Opening to a nose of classic expressions, the 2018 Syrah boasts elements of fresh cracked black peppercorn, olive tapenade and hung meat, dusty blackberry, dried herbs and dusty purple flowers with notions of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is precise, focused and elegant with a full-framed profile that sways between dark juicy fruit and mineral dusty essence. The Syrah continues to unpack its complexities over the long, evolving finish that lingers on for moments after the wine has left the palate. Bravo! 92/100
