Lobenberg: »High Hopes« ist ein Blend, der auf Syrah von Schiefer Böden aus dem Swartland basiert. Die Region ist heute mit Sicherheit eine der interessantesten und nachgefragtesten Südafrikas. Angefangen hat der Trend in der Region, nordwestlich von Kapstadt, mit den nun schon ikonischen Winzern Eben Sadie und Adi Badenhorst. 30 Prozent der Syrah Trauben für »High Hopes« wurden als Ganztrauben, das heißt mitsamt ihrer Stiele vergoren. Anschließend wurde der Syrah in 500 Liter Eichentonneaux ausgebaut. Die Grenache wurde hingegen entrappt und im Barrique vergoren. Nach zehn Monaten Holzausbau wurde dann der Blend zusammengefügt. Mittleres, klares rubinrot im Glas mit violetten Reflexen. An der Nase ein eher dunkles Profil mit verlockender Würze. Pflaume und frische, reife Schwarzkirsche. Mediterrane Kräuter wie Thymian und Lorbeer leiten auf frisches Fleisch und ein Hauch Vanille über. Ganz dezent kommt Oliventapenade und die rauchige Granitmineralität durch. Da geht schon enorm viel ab im Glas! Im Mund hat der Wein einen animierenden, feinen Gripp. Bitterschokolade, Blaubeere und wieder satte schwarze Kirsche und Brombeere. Super Druck und dennoch so erfreulich Frisch mit Noten von Lavendel und hellem Lakritz, die sich um die ultrafeinen Tannine legen. Das ist schon echt aufregender Stoff, und in seiner Preisklasse absolut überragend!

Galloni über: High Hopes Syrah

-- Galloni: The 2023 High Hopes does not include any Cinsault this year, with the Syrah whole-bunch-fermented using submerged cap and aged in concrete, foudre and 300-liter French oak. It has a perfumed nose with wilted rose petal, peony and light loamy scents, tightly wound red berry fruit and hints of bergamot that develop with time. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, a wonderful silver thread of acidity and a pure, Côte-Rôtie finish—black olive tapenade on the aftertaste. Superb.

Tim Atkin über: High Hopes Syrah

-- Tim Atkin: High Hopes is Lukas van Loggerenberg's Côtes du Rhône style Swartland red blend, made with Syrah and 8% Grenache from blue slate and schist soils, respectively. Taut, elegant and spicy, it has aromas of black olive, thyme and brine, very subtle older oak, plenty of acidity and underlying grip and blackberry and pomegranate flavours. 2025-30

Suckling über: High Hopes Syrah

-- Suckling: This abounds with roasted-herb aromas as well as notes of peaches, strawberries and lavender. It’s medium-bodied, lightly peppery and seductive with tight-knit tannins. Fragrant and elegant. 92% syrah (whole-bunch fermented) and 8% grenache. Drink or hold.

Weingut über: High Hopes Syrah

-- Weingut: Probably the most physically intensive wine we’ve made to date. We used the submerged cap method to wholebunch ferment the Syrah, and boy was it a story to get the grapes out of the tanks! The end result was glorious though. This year there is no Cinsaut in this blend as it just didn’t add that extra magic it brought to previous vintages. So 2023 features 92% Syrah and 8% Grenache. On the nose is everything you want on a great Syrah from the Swartland — black fruit, violets and a beautiful olive brine finish. The palate is defined by black pepper and black forest fruits. 2023 was probably the smoothest harvest I’ve seen to date. We had a fantastic team joined by experienced interns. The grapes ripened at various stages allowing us more time in the cellar without having to worry about a bottleneck. The growing season was really dry before decent rains in the second week of December 2022 helped the vineyards reach optimal ripeness without too much stress. Although there was some rain during harvest, these well-drained granite soils really showed their worth. All the wines have focus, precision and a lot of perfume along with wonderful fruit concentration.
