Heiner Lobenberg über:
St. Eden 2018

Suckling über: St. Eden

-- Suckling: Extremely aromatic and energetic with blackberries and essence of currants. Fresh and transparent. Full-bodied with dark fruit and some spice, inkwell and blood. Very structured and tannic, but balanced and polished. Undercurrent of acidity. Contrastive. Better after 2026. 99/100

Jeb Dunnuck über: St. Eden

-- Jeb Dunnuck: The 2018 St. Eden is pure magic and ranks with the crème de la crème in the vintage. Loaded with pure cassis and blueberry fruits as well as notes of chocolate, spice, and earth, this big, rich, full-bodied beauty has building tannins and a great, great finish. Flawlessly balanced, let’s hope it shows this well from bottle! 97-100/100

Galloni über: St. Eden

-- Galloni: The 2018 St. Eden is dense and powerful from the start. Usually a much more charming and sensual wine, the St. Eden is a beast, at least in the early going. Dark fruit, chocolate, leather, spice and licorice all build in the glass. The St. Eden has a lot going on, even if the elements have not quite come together yet. Bright acids linger on the persistent, expressive finish. I can't wait to taste it from bottle. The 2018 is such a fascinating wine. The immediacy and sensuality of this site can almost be too much if not reined in, which is exactly what winemaker Cory Empting has started to do in recent years. The results speak for themselves. 96-98/100

Parker über: St. Eden

-- Parker: A barrel sample, the 2018 St. Eden is deep garnet-purple in color. The nose is a little closed at this nascent stage, offering broody glimpses at blackcurrant jelly, boysenberries and black raspberries before opening out to a spicy undercurrent of cloves, black pepper and cumin seed. The palate is built like a brick house with a solid structure of ripe, grainy tannins and a lively backbone framing the full-bodied, muscular fruit, finishing long and layered. 96-98/100

Weingut über: St. Eden

-- Weingut: Due to the low rainfall in winter, we pruned the vines shorter than in previous years to focus the growth. This decision ultimately led to a lower yield than is typical for this site. An unexpected but welcome rainfall in the early spring allowed the vines to grow to their potential. Harvest began in the last days of September and was completed nearly one week later.Dark fruits intermixed with hints of fresh herbs create a nuanced nose. The wine enters flush with fleshy textures, while an undercurrent of acidity emerges next, carrying the wine’s mineral tinges along the palate. The wine is slightly svelte yet retains depth. The long finish is defined by an unforgettable vibration that keeps the wine both alive and vivid.
