Bürklin Wolf Riesling Forster Pechstein 2018

-- Galloni: I especially adore Pechstein, but I hardly think that’s the reason why cellarmaster Libelli showed me this wine as the last in his vintage 2018 “grand cru” lineup. High-toned aromas suggest diverse green herbal concentrates, notably mint and thyme, accompanied by enticing scents of apple and ripe white peach, along with evocations of ocean spray that anticipate the saline savor to come. The overall aromatic effect is much less aggressive than that of the corresponding Ungeheuer, but if anything even more diverse and intriguing. The palate is plush and satiny, but alkaline and stony notes suggest firm underpinnings. The vibrant, sensationally sustained finish adds mouthwatering, smoke-tinged salinity to a carpet of herbs and luscious abundance of fruit. The combination of finesse and precision, subtlety and complexity, richness and animation, renders this a Pfalz Riesling difficult to challenge, even if you are Kirchenstück! Bottling was anticipated early in 2020. Unfortunately, there is very little of this to bottle – and the reason for that may also help explain the wine’s extraordinary quality. The Bürklin-Wolf team reluctantly decided that the extremely old and in part sickly vines that dominate their Pechstein would have to be replaced. But rather than doing this in one fell swoop as they had in the case of Jesuitengarten and thereby triggering a significant gap in “G. C.” production, they decided to replant in two stages, leaving a small share of the healthiest old vines in production until the young ones are ready to inform a Pechstein G.C. 95-96/100
