Lobenberg: Der Lote D ist einer der absoluten »Flaggschiffweine« aus dem Hause Niepoort. Terroir pur, ungeschminkt, immer extrem elegant und präzise. Hauptsächlich Baga, sowie etwas Poeirinho - sehr typisch für das Bairrada. Die über 100 Jahre alten Reben stehen auf kalkhaltigem Lehm auf Meeresniveau. Vier- bis fünfwöchige Gärung im Edelstahltank und anschließender Ausbau, inklusive biologischem Säureabbau, im traditionellen 2500-Liter Fass. Abgefüllt im Juni 2017. Schon die Farbe wirkt ungewöhnlich; in hellem Granatrot schimmert der Lote D im Glas. Die Nase erinnert mit viel Leder, Mokka und Würze von schwarzem Pfeffer zunächst etwas an einen Rioja Gran Reserva, aber deutlich filigraner und heller mit Noten von Sauerkirsche und Johannisbeere. Dieses Spiel zwischen Rotfruchtigkeit und dieser leicht wilden, animalischen Note ist schon unglaublich spannend und eigenständig. Am Gaumen dann sehr zupackend und straff, wieder Sauerkirsche gepaart mit hoher Mineralität und viel Grip am Gaumen. Vibrierend, ja fast bitzelnd. Tannin ist präsent, aber reif. Dabei sehr lang und ätherisch. Ich musste noch einmal auf die Flasche schauen, aber es sind tatsächlich nur 11,5% Vol. – wow, was für eine irre Tiefe und dabei so schön trinkig. Das ist schon ziemlich einzigartig, aber auch etwas anspruchsvoll und aktuell noch etwas wild, aber dabei überhaupt nicht unausgewogen. Dennoch empfehle ich etwas Zeit in der Karaffe, große Burgundergläser und ihn nicht zu warm zu trinken. Von diesem Meisterstück wurden insgesamt nur 2610 Flaschen produziert. 97-99/100

-- Weingut: The Lote D is a very special terroir-driven wine whose every aromatic nuance reflects the deeply calcareous South-facing vineyard slope from which it was produced. With its light colour, low alcohol content and tremendous ageing potential, it is a tribute to the great Bairrada wines of the past. Dirk and Daniel Niepoort foster great passion for this wine and have therefore always harvested and vinified it separately. This is a father-and-son creation of great character. The harvest began mid-September in the old vineyards. The fruit showed well-balanced ripeness, with good sugar levels and relatively high malic acid contents. This resulted in favourable pH levels in the wines and higher total acidity levels than in the previous year. Our red wines display good balance and beautiful freshness. The Lote D 2015 started off its fermentation process with a period of 4 - 5 weeks in stainless steel and then finished fermenting in a large 2500L wooden barrel. This is also where the wine completed malolactic fermentation and an ageing period of 20 months. It was bottled unfiltered. This 2015 single vineyard wine displays a brilliant violet hue. On the nose, it shows the unmistakable character of the Baga grape variety with smoky and leathery notes as well as hints of wild berries, dark cherries and blossoms. After swirling in the glass, it reveals all the potential of this single vineyard, with incredibly fine, delicate and persistent aromas. On the palate, the wine impresses with its acidity, structure, elegance and salty finish. Thanks to its high acidity and marked but smooth tannins, this is a wine which will age beautifully in the bottle. It finishes very long, with the same linearity and freshness. It is best enjoyed slightly chilled (15°C), in a Pinot Noir glass.
