Lobenberg: Quella ist eine 3,6 Ha Lage in den Vaca Mountains, die sich im Osten des Napa Valley von Norden nach Süden erstrecken. Der Name stammt tatsächlich vom Wort »Quelle« ab – der Boden ist ein altes Flussbett und besteht aus mit vulkanischer Asche gemischtem Geröll. Der steile Berghang liegt in perfekter südwest Exposition und erreicht über 180 Höhenmeter. Quella reift für mindestens 30 Monate in französischer Eiche, bevor er abgefüllt wird. Quella ist für mich der würzigeste der Grands Crus von Bond. In der Nase ströhmen Graphit, Eisen, Blut, schwarzer Pfeffer zusammen mit dunklen Waldbeeren, Blaubeeren und schwarzer Johannisbeere aus dem Glas. Dann im Mund legt sich eine fantastische, fast ätherische Würze um die Frucht. Schwarze und rote Kirschen mischen sich mit nassem Waldboden. Das Tannin ist reif, aber linear strukturiert, und dabei ist die ausgezeichnete Säure in perfekter Balance und Harmonie. Ein großer Wein! 100/100

-- Galloni: The 2018 Quella is another superb wine in this range. Dark and brooding, the Quella shows off the more virile side of the vintage. Black cherry, plum, gravel, spice, savory herbs, leather and licorice build as this heady, explosive Cabernet shows off its personality. This site, rich in volcanic ash and river cobble, yields a wine of breadth and power. In 2018, the Quella is bold, dramatically beautiful and just sublime. 96-98/100

It’s full-bodied and has notable purity, not much baby fat, and building tannins. A pretty, elegant expression from this site, it’s going to benefit from bottle age. 96-98/100

-- Parker: A barrel sample, the 2018 Quella has a deep garnet-purple color and opens with the most gorgeous perfume of violets, red and black plums, Morello cherries and cassis plus hints of iron ore and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers lovely energy and tension, framed by fine-grained tannins and finishing with beautiful purity. 95-97/100

-- Weingut: Budbreak occurred at the end of the first week of April. The growth in the early part of the year was very optimistic, leading to a generous bloom. We were very strict during the fruit-thinning phase before veraison, allowing the vines to progress without undue stress until harvest, which began in late September.Mineral aromas are an ode to this ancient hillside riverbed. There is an uncharacteristic richness that unfolds and builds, before branching into delicate laterals that diffuse effortlessly. The weave of the wine is open-knit, while the finish is seamless, enlivened from within by a fine harmonic vibrance.
