Lobenberg: Nicolás Catena Zapata ist einer der Vorreiter des argentinischen Qualitätsweinbaus, und maßgeblich dafür verantwortlich dass Malbec aus Argentinien seine heutige Berühmtheit erlangte. Diese nach ihm benannte Bordeaux Cuvée, die die großen Weine des Médoc aus dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert zum Vorbild hat in welchen Malbec zusammen mit Cabernet Sauvignon die erste Geige spielte, wurde erstmals 1997 gemacht. Inzwischen ist Tochter Laura Catena in Nicolás Fußstapfen getreten und sorgt dafür dass die Frucht der alten, wurzelechten Reben der Paraje Altamira und Lunlunta weiterhin großartige Weine hervorbringt. Nach sorgfältiger Handlese in einer Mischung aus Eichenfässern, Stahltanks und Beton zum Teil mit Stielen vergoren. Anschließend für 18 Monate in französischer Eiche ausgebaut. Tiefe, beinahe undurchsichtige violette Farbe. Dunkle Kirsche, Cassis, reife Pflaume, Lakritz und Kräuterwürze explodieren geradezu aus dem Glas. Im Mund von absolut beeindruckender Struktur, aber nichts ist zu viel, sondern alles in totaler Harmonie. Reif und rund mit dunklen Beeren, dunkler Schokolade und Kaffee, dabei ist aber die alpine Eleganz klar spürbar. Eine absolute Überfliegercuvée! 96+/100

-- Decanter: The 2016 vintage is a classic example, a superb blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with 31% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Franc that’s still in its infancy. Subdued aromas of cassis, black cherries and nuanced herbaceous and tobacco notes. A lovely fluid entrance builds on concentration and complexity. Malbec’s seductive juiciness joins a vertical Cabernet structure, tannins and integrated oak, with a long, lingering finish. A wine to wait for. 97/100

-- Tim Atkin: Consistently among the best red blends in Argentina, Nicolás combines Cabernet Sauvignon with 31% Malbec, aged in 20% new wood in 2016. There was no Agrelo component in this vintage, so it’s a cuvée from Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira. Elegant, perfumed and refined, this reflects the cooler vintage. 97/100

-- Parker: The 2016 Nicolás Catena Zapata has not been released, and they are going to sell the 2017 before it. This is the one wine, together with the Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec, that is sold through the négoce in Bordeaux for Europe and Asia. This is backward, serious and austere, with terrific balance and great length. This is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon from Gualtallary and 31% Malbec from Nicasia. There is also some 8% Cabernet Franc that seems to add a touch, and in 2016, it didn't need irrigation because there was enough rain. This seems to follow the style of the 2013, a little tight, perhaps because of the Cabernets. This is nuanced and complex, with very good integration of the varieties and the oak, fruit, acidity and mineral texture. One of the best vintages for this bottling. 74,400 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2017. 96/100

Falstaff über: Nicolas Catena Zapata

-- Falstaff: Brombeere, Heidelbeere, etwas Nougat, florale Töne. Im Mund extrem elegant, aber zugleich dicht, salzig, straff und kompakt, kein Gramm Fett zuviel, fast pikant wirkend in seiner schlanken Verdichtung, wirkt noch sehr jung, mit ausgezeichneter Länge. 96/100

-- Galloni: The 2016 Nicolás Catena Zapata is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Franc from Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley. It was aged with painstaking precision and presents an alcohol content that reflects the cool year. Perhaps its best quality is the delicate nose of red fruit and floral aromas, which features blackcurrant, plum and lavender notes. Relaxed on the palate with thoroughly polished tannins and measured juice, the texture grows even silkier when the well-integrated freshness comes into play. A dusting of chalk makes a late entrance to coincide with the return of the fruity flavors. This is a layered, increasingly profound and nuanced wine. 96/100

-- Suckling: This a rich and flavorful red, showing blackcurrants and tobacco. Full-bodied, soft and fruity with bright and spicy, oyster-shell and fresh-herb character. Serious cabernet blend. 95/100

Gerstl über: Nicolas Catena Zapata

-- Gerstl: Der Wein strahlt zugleich Frische und Opulenz aus. Ein verführerischer Duft aus schwarzer Frucht, Schokolade und feinsten Kräutern tänzelt aus dem Glas. Es ist eine Eleganz, die man so nicht aus Argentinien erwarten würde. Am Gaumen kommt er unheimlich geschmeidig und gleichzeitig saftig daher. Das Holz ist bestens integriert und drängt nie zu stark in den Vordergrund. Die Tannine sind äussert delikat und geschliffen fein, so dass sich der Wein bereits in einem trinkfreudigen Zustand präsentiert. Das würzige Cabernet-Finale hinterlässt Spuren von edelsten Kräutern.
