Lobenberg: In diesen Wein fließen die jungen Reben der Terrassenlagen. Alles umgeben von Eichen- und Kastanienbäumen. Ernte von Hand in kleinen Behältern, Vergärung im Edelstahl bei Temperaturkontrolle (25 – 30 Grad) , dann malolaktische Gärung und 12 Monate Ausbau in großer slawonischer Eiche. In der Nase haben wir zart duftende Walderdbeere, Kirsche und Vulkangestein. Dann am Gaumen wieder Kirsche und Cassis. Vibrierend und mineralisch, dabei in einen feinen Schmelz abgleitend, klar und saftig im Abgang. Eine tolle Einführung in diese faszinierende Rebsorte. 92/100

Jahrgangsbericht

Die Sommer auf Sizilien sind generell sehr warm, im Jahrgang 2017 war es sogar noch etwas wärmer als in den darauffolgenden drei Sommern, zudem regnete es durch das Jahr hinweg weniger auf der Insel. Selbst im Oktober war es 2017 noch angenehm warm, dabei sind es die Bewohner der kleinen Dörfer auf dem Ätna gewohnt, zu dem Zeitpunkt normalerweise bereits die Heizung anzuschalten – 2017 war das noch lange nicht nötig. Es resultieren durch die Bank kleine, konzentrierte Trauben. 2017 war ein Jahrgang der Power, Dichte und Konzentration in den Weinen Siziliens.

-- Suckling: Love the freshness and drive to this Etna red, which is redolent of blueberries, cranberries, newly picked cherries and orange zest. So crunchy and vibrant on the palate, without a hint of overripeness. Medium-bodied and energetic, but serious. Drink now. 94/100

-- Galloni: Deep red. Very flinty and pure aromas of red cherry, redcurrants and herbs. Then mineral with juicy acidity and plenty of youthful vibrancy to the floral flavors. A lovely Etna Rosso that finishes long and graceful. Unless memory fails me, this is the best ever Etna Rosso by Tasca d’Almerita at a similar stage of development. Well done. 92/100

-- Parker: The most accessible of these red wines from Tasca's Etna Tascante project is the 2017 Etna Rosso Ghiaia Nera. A pure expression of Nerello Mascalese, the wine sees fruit sourced from various sites, including young vines planted on the northeast flank of the volcano in the Contrada Piano Dario. This vineyard consists of 98 terraces with vines surrounded by chestnut trees and forest bramble. This bright, mid-weight wine is redolent of wild cherry, blue flower and volcanic ash. This is a versatile, easy-drinking and food-friendly interpretation from Etna. An ample 50,000 bottles are made, and this wine awards you one of the best values you'll find in Sicily. 91/100

-- Jeb Dunnuck: Another good value, the 2017 Ghiaia Nera offers a medium ruby/translucent hue to go with complex notes of spiced cherries, leafy underbrush, forest floor, and flowers. Almost Pinot Noir-like in its complexity as well as texture, it's medium-bodied, has a wonderful sense of minerality, terrific balance, and a great finish. 91/100
