Beaujolais Fleurie Les Garants
-- John Gilman zu 2022: Jean-Étienne Chermette’s 2022 les Garants is a lovely young wine. As I have mentioned before, the vineyard of les Garants lies down in the valley of Fleurie, near the vineyards of Clos de la Roilette, and like those vines, was once part of the Moulin-à-Vent appellation before the redistricting that took place with the official AOC boundaries were set. The wine is raised in ten percent new Burgundy barrels, with the rest raised in foudres. The 2020 les Garants is bright, ripe and sappy on the nose, offering up a beautiful bouquet of black cherries, pomegranate, pigeon, dark soil tones, a touch of raw cocoa, violets and a discreet topnote of fresh thyme. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and beautifully structured this year, with a rock solid core of fruit, lovely soil signature and grip, ripe tannins and a long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. This is first class Fleurie that belies its old Moulin-à-Vent classification, as it has a good foundation of suave tannin and will need a few years in the cellar to start to really drink with generosity. Fine, fine juice!
