Sauvignon Blanc Pouri
-- Weingut: The inaugural vintage of Sauvignon blanc produced in our cellars, we have decided to explore two different styles of the variety. This idea of exploring contrast became the overarching theme behind the two wines, one light and one dark. From this theme sprung the philosophy between the two winemakers styles, one from the old world but creating a bright and fresh, fruit forward ‘New World’ style, the other from the new world but creating a darker and more textured and emotional ‘Old World’ style. The idea of contrast was explored further as we decided to create the first artist label for a Dönnhoff wine, having references to both Germany and New Zealand in the artwork (the Nahe river flows through the middle of the design, which is also the outline of a Kiwi bird). Created by a young Kiwi artist, it plays off the idea of one wine being bright - this is the Marama (Maori for light), and the other being dark - this is the Pouri (Maori for darkness). Both winemakers had identical grapes to begin with, coming from the same vineyard parcel and harvested the same day, the difference in the final wine has come down to the vision and creativity of the winemaking process. Creating wine is a lifelong passion for us here at Dönnhoff and wines such as these keep it inventive and fun. Enjoy exploring the balance that can be found not only within each bottle but also between each wine and the artwork expressed on the bottle. We recommend that the Marama be consumed while it is fresh and young and that the Pouri can comfortably be cellared or decanted. *** Pouri (Maori - meaning darkness). Focused on an ‘Old World’ style of Sauvignon blanc, the Pouri was created with the idea of showing the texture and complexity of the variety. The resulting wine is less fruit forward but instead explores the interaction of Sauvignon blanc and Oak barrels, more savoury and dark this wine is all about texture and mouthfeel. Best enjoyed with food, this wine can be cellared or decanted when young.
