Lobenberg: Contrada Guardiola ist eine alte Lage zwischen 800m und 1000m, fast gänzlich verloren gegangen durch einen Ausbruch des Ätna im Jahre 1947. Wir haben auch hier, wie bei allen Contrada, natürlich reinsortigen Nerello Mascalese. Die Reben sind über 100 Jahre alt. Und auch hier 18 Monate Ausbau im großen Eichenfass. Wow, hier haben wir wahrscheinlich die beste Einzellage. Der Guardiola ist in der Nase voller Frucht, rote Kirsche und rote Johannisbeere, dazu milder dominikanischer Tabak und Süßholz. Schon der erste Schluck ist mundwässernd saftig, die rote Frucht gespiegelt, wieder Kirsche und Johannisbeere, Fruchtsüße von der Himbeere, Anklänge von Orange und Anis. Extrem geschmeidige Tannine und eine exzellente Frische durch die feine Säure. Frucht, Phenole und Säure im besten Zusammenspiel. Lang anhaltend im Abgang, leicht mandelig, Hier ist Harmonie. Barolo von Conterno meets Chambolle Musigny! Kraftvoll, aber nie fett, immer Finesse, immer Frisch. Ein Wein der Maßstäbe für Sizilien setzt. (Man ist geneigt zu sagen: dieser Guardiola hat Pep) 97-98/100

-- WS: Dense and sinewy, yet harmonious overall, with a core of spiced black cherry and pomegranate, red licorice, herb and graphite, wrapped in fine-grained tannins. Mouthwatering acidity carries the ripe fruit character on the finish. Nerello Mascalese. 93/100

-- Parker: The 2012 Contrada G reveals earthy tones of crushed granite and flint that serve as a vivid remind that the great Etna volcano is never far. The Guardiola vineyard, which is stunningly beautiful by the way, sits between 800 and 1,000 meters above sea level. Franchetti's property is located near the bottom of the Contrada and has vines that are up to 80-years-old. The vineyard was spared from destruction by the 1947 eruption that sent violent lava flows down this way. Luscious fruit comes into focus and the wine is surprisingly soft and yielding on the finish. You rarely get this level of sensual richness in Etna reds. 93/100

-- Robinson: An old domain between 800 m and 1,000 m that was threatened by the 1947 eruption apparently. Passopisciaro buys the fruit from a lower parcel and says that it produces ‘complex wines with rich flavours, typically of marzipan, orange and crying red fruit’ (sic). Mid crimson; bluer than the Rampante bottling. Very sumptuous on the nose with more apparent body. Substantial wine with real bite. Very confident. Almost mainstream! Gorgeous balance and lots of finely etched fruit followed by sculpted refined lightly grainy texture and masses of acidity. Long and so vibrant! 18/20
