Lobenberg: Das Terroir liegt nahe an Château Latour (Die Comtesse hat ihre Weinberge eher Richtung Saint-Julien), der maskuline Stil resultiert auch daher. Außerdem das Schwesterweingut von Lynch Bages, gleiche Besitzverhältnisse. Die 2018er Cépage lautet 78% Cab. Sauvignon und 22% Merlot. Sehr konzentrierte, intensive, harmonische Nase, trotz der Minderheit von Merlot hat dieser einen großen Einfluss, viel Schwarzkirsche und Brombeere. Direkt nach Pichon Comtesse probiert dachte ich, dass es hier sehr schwer wird, aber Pichon Baron hat ein ganz eigenes Standing, ist völlig anders als das gegenüberliegende Pichon Comtesse. Deutlich würziger, deutlich süßer, die Maulbeere ist viel weiter vorne, viel mehr Lakritze. Hohe Intensität mit viel Cassis, Veilchen, Lakritze, das sind die Dominanten. Unglaublich konzentriert, aus sehr kleinen Beeren gewonnen und die Frische nur aus der extrem reifen Frucht holend. Nicht überreif, aber mir durch die enorme Konzentration fast ein wenig süß erscheinend im Mund, das ist unglaublich viel Wein. Ich hoffe, dass er im Alter diese Süße noch etwas abbaut und noch etwas feiner wird. So ist es zumindest ein Maul voll Wein und schwer so eine Flasche alleine zu trinken. Ich erkenne dennoch an, dass das ein großartiger, konzentrierter Wein ist. 98-100/100

-- Decanter: Generous aromatics of dark berry fruit, caramel, and spice are clear indicators of a warm vintage, but there are also floral notes and no heaviness whatsoever. There is juicy, savoury substance on the palate, sustained by gossamer tannins of surprising delicacy, but lurking underneath is the power so characteristic of this vintage. A few years of cellaring will be needed for the terroir expression to hit its stride. 99/100

-- Quarin: Couleur rouge, sombre, intense et belle. Nez intense, fin, fruité, puissant, profond et crémeux. Ample dès l'attaque et très pulpeux au développement, riche en milieu de bouche, puissant, aromatique, le vin se montre savoureux et gras, avec beaucoup de goût et une sensation veloutée étonnante. Grande saveur d'encre et de fruits noirs dans la persistance. C'est superbe. 98/100

-- Parker: The 2018 Pichon-Longueville Baron is made up of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot. The Merlot was harvested September 24-25, and the Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested October 3-10. The wine is to be aged 18 months in barriques, 80% new and 20% one year old, and production represents 50% of the harvest this year. Very deep purple-black colored, it begins a little coy, rolling slowly and languidly out of the glass with notions of baked raspberries, blueberry coulis, crème de cassis and incense plus nuances of lilacs, truffles, damp soil and garrigue with wafts of lavender and wild sage. Full-bodied, voluptuous and oh-so-seductive, the palate reveals layer upon layer of savory, earthy and black fruit preserves, framed by wonderfully ripe, velvety tannins and lovely freshness, finishing very long and perfumed. Beautiful. 97-99/100

-- Jeb Dunnuck: Representing just 50% of the production and a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot aging in 80% new French oak, the 2018 Pichon-Longueville Baron reveals a deep, saturated purple color as well as a decadent bouquet of crème de cassis, high class tobacco, crushed violets, and freshly sharpened cedar pencils, which is about as Pauillac as you can get. Full-bodied, incredibly opulent, with moderate acidity and silky tannins on the palate, it still shows beautiful purity, freshness, and elegance, with the tannins giving focus and length on the finish. It's a brilliant, brilliant wine that's in the same class as the 1990, 2000, 2005, 2009, and 2010. 97-99/100

-- Galloni: Suave and sophisticated, the 2018 Pichon Baron is a real head-turner. Silky, polished tannins wrap around a core of inky dark red/purplish berry fruit. More than anything else, the 2018 impresses for its exceptional balance. All the elements are so impeccably balanced. That will make the 2018 easy to drink relatively early, although my preference would be to leave it in the cellar for the better part of the next decade. Rose petal, spice, blood orange and mint add brightness and perfume on the long, finely-knit finish. 97/100

Dichtes Purpurgranat mit schwarzer Mitte und violettem Rand. Verhaltenes, sehr delikates Bouquet mit Wildkirsche, Schokopralinen, Waldhimbeeren und Holunder. Im zweiten Ansatz duftiges Cassis, rote Pflaumen und Veilchen. Am kräftigen Gaumen mit seidiger Textur und engmaschigem, reifen Tannin gepaart mit stützender Frische. Mit viel blau- und schwarzbeeriger Frucht, dunkler Mineralik und einem genialen Zug im schier langen Finale. Hier heisst es Geduld zu bewahren. 2027 – 2055 19/20

-- Gerstl: Wie immer duftet er etwas reifer, süsser, opulenter als die Nachbarn, aber auch hier ist viel Frische, viel Tiefe und Komplexität, auch das deutet einen ganz grossen edlen Pauillac an. Am Gaumen wirkt er erstaunlicherweise etwas schlanker, insbesondere als der monumentale Lynch-Bages, den ich gerade zuvor probiert habe, er hat auch einen ganz leicht burschikosen Einschlag, aber durchaus im positiven Sinne, der Wein hat Klasse, lebt erstaunlicherweise sehr von seiner Eleganz. 19/20

Pirmin Bilger über: Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron 2eme Cru

-- Pirmin Bilger: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon und 22% Merlot. Ausdruckstarke schwarze Frucht mit zarten Aromen von rotbeerigen Nuancen. Herrlich reif und mit guter Würze unterlegt, welche die Frische noch zusätzlich unterstreicht. Dahinter kommen edle Aromen nach Leder, etwas Tabak und Graphit zum Vorschein. Vibrierend kraftvoll und tiefgründig kühles Bouquet. Am Gaumen zeigt er eine irre rassige Säure, welche ihm diesen saftig frischen Charakter gibt. Viel Kirschgeschmack, etwas Cassis und Lakritze werden von einem bunten Strauss von edelsten Kräutern begleitet. Starke aber extrem feinkörnige Tanninstruktur, welche wunderbar zu diesem würzig reichen Geschmack passt. Ein herrlich frischer Baron mit grossem Potential. 19/20

-- Wine Spectator: A very polished and pure expression of Pauillac, but don't go to sleep on it. As charming and vibrant as the cassis, cherry preserve and blackberry paste flavors are, they have a latent saturated feel. And then there's a serious network of iron girders supporting it all, along with sweet tobacco, floral and worn cedar accents. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2030 through 2050. 97/100
