Lobenberg: Dieser Premier Grand Cru Class A ist mit Ausone zusammen fast immer der Superstar des rechten Ufers. 55% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Franc. Die Nase ist noch eine ganze Dimension dichter als der Zweitwein. Etwas weniger fein, aber genauso tänzelnd. Dichte rote und schwarze Kirsche. Auch hier satte Gesteinsmineralität schon in der Nase. Unglaublich raffiniert, hintergründig und dicht. Die Vorankündigungen für diesen Wein bewahrheiten sich. Scheinbar sind die Cabernet-orientierten Weine auf dieser über Kalk stehenden Kieslinse wirklich so überragend in diesem Jahrgang. Wir hatten das schon bei Jean Faure, wahrscheinlich wird Vieux Chateau Certan, der direkte Nachbar in Pomerol, ähnlich gut sein. Die Nase ist auf jeden Fall berauschend. Der Mund greift Kirsche und Johannisbeere auf, Maulbeere, Tee, Oliven. Er ist aber ultrazart und fein und verträumt dazu. Total seidiges Tannin, leichter Bitterstoff am Ende. Vielleicht fehlt ihm zu 2009 und 2010 ein ganz kleiner Hauch der etwas süßeren druckvolleren Mitte, obwohl er im zweiminütigen Nachhall diese kirschige Fruchtsüße schon mitbringt, nur eben nicht ganz so dicht wie in den ganz großen Jahren. Aber macht das was? Wie man so schön sagt - das Bessere ist der Feind des Guten? Hätte ich diese Jahrgänge nicht noch präsent, würde ich Cheval Blanc in diesem Jahrgang 100 Punkte geben. So ist er dennoch einer der allerbesten Weine. 97-99/100

-- Gerstl: Das ist pure Raffinesse, was aus diesem Glas strahlt, raffinierte Cabernet Würze, sehr typisch Cheval, sagenhaft komplex. Samtener Gaumenfluss, feine Rasse, wunderbare Extraktsüsse, die Tannine sind exzellent, da sind feinste Aromen ohne Ende, der Wein hat eine sinnliche Ausstrahlung, das ist ein ganz grosser Cheval-Blanc von Stile eines 85ers oder 2000ers. 19+/20

-- Vinum: Die Verantwortlichen von Cheval Blanc investierten ein gutes Jahrzehnt in die bessere Kenntnis und Bestellung seines ungewöhnlichen Terroirs am Rande von Saint-Émilion. Erst dann liessen sie einen neuen Keller bauen, der das präzise Umsetzen des im Rebberg Erreichten ermöglichte. In der Folge verwöhnte uns das Gut mit einer Reihe hervorragender Jahrgänge, deren Höhepunkt 2014 bildet. Der hohe Anteil an Cabernet Franc führte zu einem einmaligen, subtilen, filigranen Wein mit herrlicher Aromatik, dem es weder an Gehalt noch Tiefe fehlt. 19.5/20

-- WS: Reserved aromatically for now, but this has a lot at its clutch, with remarkably silky plum, currant and raspberry fruit inlaid seamlessly with alder, rooibos tea and bergamot notes. The 2014 is bright, finessed and persistent. It will almost certainly put on weight in bottle. I have a feeling something special is developing here. 96/100

-- Parker: The Château Cheval Blanc 2014 is a blend of 45% Cabernet Franc and 55% Merlot, picked from 19 September until 8 October. The alcohol level is 13.25% matured in 100% new oak, which Pierre Lurton told me was prolonged due to the heterogenous soils and wanting to wait for the Cabernet Franc on clay soils to reach full maturity. It is quintessential Cheval Blanc on the nose: predominantly red fruit here rather than black, touches of incense and dried roses, a dab of liquorice underneath. The Cabernet Franc is the engine behind the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. This is not a silky smooth Cheval Blanc – here there is an graininess to the tannin that exert a gentle grip in the mouth. It is a complex and cerebral wine with cracked black pepper on the almost ferrous finish. Like the second wine, it is linear and fresh, in some ways reminiscent of the string of superb wines produced in the 1980s. This is a formidable Cheval Blanc whose evolution will be fascinating to witness. 95-97/100

On the palate, the wine is refined, soft and silky, fresh, elegant and pure. It lacks the density found in recent vintages like 2009 but instead relies on refined tannins and textures, transporting the aromas of beautiful, pure fruit all the way to the finish. From a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Franc, the wine reached 13.25% alcohol with a pH of 3.65, representing 75% of the Grand Vin. 94-96/100
