Lobenberg: Von den 50 bis 80 Jahre alten Reben in der Monopol-Lage Pira. Im Durchschnitt wurden fünf bis zehn Prozent Ganztrauben mitvergoren, um Frische zu bewahren und den Alkohol tief zu halten. Der Unterschied des Pira Vecchie Viti zum normalen Barolo ist schon immens. Die Verschlossenheit im Vecchie Viti zeigt einen ganz anderen Wein. Wie ein Baukasten mit Legosteinen. Rechts, links, oben, unten – sauber definiert und druckvoll schiebend. Unglaublich viel Schub schon in der Nase. Reich, leichte Rappigkeit im Hintergrund, das macht ihn Frisch. Im Mund eine Explosion, ein Kracher. So ein Kraftbolzen und trotzdem so unendlich fein. Der Wein hat einen sensationellen Schub aus roter Frucht, aber auch aus Rappen. Alles zusammen kommt mit Eukalyptus, reichlich Minze und dunkler Lakritze. Immer wieder hochrollend mit viel Salz und grandioser Frische. Was für ein Knaller! Der kann auch locker mit den Red Labels von Giacosa mithalten. Ein Barolo der Extraklasse. Groß! 98-100/100

This wine really stood out to me and remains ever-so compelling thanks to its silky elegance that is feather light but also extremely polished and fresh. I just love this wine, as it sparks a reaction in both the palate and the heart. 3,164 bottles were made. 98/100

-- Decanter: From a 1.5 hectare in the Pira MGA, just below and adjacent to the winery in Castiglione Falletto, this wine is produced from old vines, the youngest of which date back to 1937. The glass doesn't show any garnet tinge but shines for its ruby colour. Cinnamon, Parma violet and earthy strawberry scents are suggestive of its graceful complexity. There are no tarry dark notes; instead, a vibrant and sleek savoury rhubarb flavour, with a briny finish and impressive concentration. Lavish tannins are woven together with refreshing acidity. An elegant wine, with a signature dusty texture on the finish. Already great. 98/100
