Heiner Lobenberg über:
Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti 2013

96–97
/100

Parker über: Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti

-- Parker: The tiny Montefico vineyard (measuring about a quarter of a hectare) was purchased in 1929, the year of Luca's grandmother was married. The property was a wedding gift to his grandmother from his great grandmother. The vines are 90 years old today and are located adjacent to vines farmed by Produttori del Barbaresco and the Giacosa family. The Montefico vineyard looks toward the town of Neive, showing more limestone in the soils compared to Asili or Pajè. As a result, the 2013 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti tends to offers more richness and structure compared to wines made from those neighboring sites, and the difference is quite striking. Perhaps the tannin is stronger in the Pajè, but this old-vine wine from Montefico (located within the township of Barbaresco) offers a more solid inner fiber with tightly integrated tannins that are less obvious, perhaps, but equally important to the power, volume and longevity of this wine. 97/100

Galloni über: Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti

-- Galloni: The 2013 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti is incredibly precise and finely sketched. Barbarescos from Montefico often are aggressive when they are young. That is far from the case here, even if the 2013 is best cellared for at least a few years. Sage, mint, tobacco, chalk, smoke, and crushed flowers add beguiling aromatic top notes to power through in a mid-weight, searing Barbaresco endowed with tremendous character. What a wine! 96/100

-- Winespectator: --Winespectator: Light-footed, this red is all about floral, wild berry, iron, leather, tobacco and woodsy aromas and flavors. The supple texture shows intensity and fine persistence on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2021 through 2035. 94/100

Weingut über: Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti

-- Weingut: --Lucas Roagna: The name Montefico is derived from the local dialect, which historically were used to name each parcel of land. Montefico is one of the historic vineyards of the village of Barbaresco and it located in the Eastern portion of the area planted to vines.Montefico has calcareous marl soils with a good amount of limestone. Our parcel is in the shape of a triangle and is exactly in the middle of the hill in the middle part of the amphitheater facing the village of Neive. Our portion of the vineyard covers an area of 0.24 Hectare (0.59 Acre). The parcel was purchased by our family in 1929.The vines for this wine have a minimum age of 50 years, thus considered old vines, and are regenerated using the massale wood system by pruning the vines within the same vineyard. The harvest takes place in October, by hand usually in the morning once the fruit has reached perfect ripeness. Before being made into wine we manually select each berry in order to have perfect fruit.Fermentation takes place exclusively in large wood casks thanks to a pied de cuve created from our indigenous yeasts. This lasts for ten days and then we use the ancient technique of maceration by splinting the submerged cap process which lasts for at least two and a half months, (70-90 days). The wine is then aged in a neutral oak barrel for approximately 5 years. The production of bottles is extremely limited, often only about one thousand bottles per vintage. We number each bottle on the label .
