Lobenberg: Fast reinsortiger Arinto dos Acores. Fast 80 Jahre alter Weinberg fast direkt am Meer, weniger als 100 Meter zu den ersten Wellen, die Gischt und der Meeres-Sprühnebel erreicht den Weinberg. Fast reiner Lava-Vulkan-Stein, sehr pur, abweisend und karg. Handlese wie es ja eh nicht anders geht hier, Direktpresse der Ganztrauben und spontane Fermentation zur Hälfte im Stahl und zur Hälfte im gebrauchten Baqrrique, Verbleib auf der Hefe und 12monatiger Ausbau ohne Batonage. Limette mit Gelbgrün mit Goldspuren, intensiv farbig. Massives Jod und Salz schon in der Nase. Apfelschale, Abrieb von Zitrusfrüchten. Der Mund kracht ziemlich, hohe Intensität von Schalen, Jod und Salz, feine Bitterspur von Schalen des Boskoop-Apfels und auch Kimschi und etwas Ingwer. Erstaunlich saftig, durchaus mit Körper unmd Fülle, mit Orangenzesten und erstaunlicher Weise Akazienhonig wieder hochrollend. Irgendwo zwischen etwas schrägem GV und Riesling aus der Wachau, HM Lang wäre sicher stolz auf den Wein. Viel Power und Druck, auch feine Schärfe, aber nie zu extrem, die saftige Balance bleibt die Dominante. Echt schick, das von Frucht und Süße gebändigte Salz und Jod bildet die Unterlage eines spannenden Unikats. 97-98/100

Parker über: Canada do Monte

-- Parker: The 2018 Canada do Monte is mostly Arinto dos Açores (over 95%, as there are some other things in the field like Verdelho and Alicante Branco) from very old vines (60 to 80 years) aged for 12 months in third use French oak. It comes in at 13.4% alcohol. There is a firm finish to go with good depth and rich texture. It has a dry Riesling-like feel to it, plus a juicy and tense finish propelled by the fine acidity. Overall, this is gorgeous, grafting beautiful fruit onto its acidity, which acts as an obvious backbone. There is plenty of power, but it is never shrill or too tightly wound. Rather, it is impeccably balanced, including that it handles the oak brilliantly too. (Sometimes, I was wondering: this has oak?) This textured and bright wine is something you'll want to keep drinking. It should continue to improve for a few years and then hold well, probably better than indicated. For the record, this kept getting better as it opened up over a couple of days. It was good, but not this good, in the first 15 minutes. As the layers peeled away, it became more impressive. There were 2,134 bottles produced. 95/100

-- Weingut: Produced from a vineyard with 60 to 80 years old, 80 meters from the sea, dominating the Arinto of the Azores, but there are also Verdelho, Boal (Malvasia Fina) and Alicante Branco (Boal de Alicante). The soils are solid lava stone formed 1500 to 2000 years ago. Grapes hand-picked, sorting table, direct press, decanted 12h in cold, first presses vinified in stainless steel in horizontal (70%), 2nd presses fermented in French oak barrels of 3 years age (30%), without batonnage for 12 months. Citrus-straw yellow color, iodine, salt, lime aroma. In the mouth a concentrated dense attack, acidity cuts in half and remains until the end of the tasting, salt, salt, salt and iodine, it is a “slap” of the sea.
