Alvarinho Po de Poeira Douro Branco
-- Katalog: -- Parker: The 2011 Branco Po de Poeira, under the Duriense appellation, is 85% Alvarinho, the rest Gouveio, the blend 50% vinified in tank with the rest aged in 500-liter new oak. This is an unusual Douro white, says winemaker Jorge Moreira, because it is mostly Alvarinho planted in a site typically used for “A” level vintage Port grapes. The oak isn’t much of a factor here. In 2009, I thought the “Po” Tinto was one of the more interesting values and overachievers. The 2011 Branco now stakes out its own claim. Pure and rather steely, full-bodied, gripping and somewhat closed, this has some hints of grass, like most of Moreira’s 2011s. In the meanwhile, it is remarkably intense in its youth. It grabbed my palate and just wouldn’t let go. Its grip and tension sold it. As it warmed, it seemed pure and laced with minerality, too. With good depth, too, this does not seem to lack for much. At the anticipated price, it is likely a steal. 92/100
