Lobenberg: Felton Roads MacMuir Pinot Noir wurde 2021 zum ersten Mal separat abgefüllt, bisher waren die Trauben der Parzelle ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Bannockburn Pinot Noir. Seit 2007 ist das der erste Neuzugang im Portfolio der absolut beeindruckenden Felton Road Weine. Die MacMuir Parzelle ist Teil der ursprünglichen Calvert Lage, welche das Weingut seit 2001 im Langzeit-Leasing bewirtschaftet. Damals war dieser Teil aber noch eine Nussbaum Wiese! 2012 wurde die Parzelle dann in hoher Rebstockdichte, mit dem besten Klonmaterial bepflanzt. Obwohl die Parzelle nur wenige hundert Meter von der Calvert entfernt ist, sind die Böden hier reichhaltiger und tiefer wodurch die Trauben ebenfalls nochmals beeindruckender und dichter werden. Der Name Macmuir ist tief in der Region verankert. Nigels Mutter war eine Muir, daher ist er ein MacMuir, also der Sohn einer Muir. Außerdem gibt es noch zwei weitere Weinberge in der Bannockburn Region, die den Muir Namen tragen. Der Wein hat ein tiefes, klares rubinrot. Dichte dunkle Beeren waben aus dem Glas, zusammen mit einem Hauch dunkler Schokolade, Gewürzen und dezenten floralen Noten, die sich erst nach und nach voll entwickeln. Im Mund ein absoluter Charmeur. Er legt sich über die Zunge mit einer festen, langanhaltenden Umarmung und gibt nach und nach erst seine wunderschöne, beeindruckende Geschmacksfülle preis. Waldbeeren, zarte Vanille, und leicht rauchige Noten gehen in schwarzen Tee und dunkle Erde über. Dabei sind die Tannine präsent, aber so fein strukturiert und seidig. Ein New Release der voll und ganz beeindruckt. 96/100

-- Suckling: A dense and centrally focused red with a solid core of fruit with a ripeness and intensity. Lots of fruit. Round and polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Juicy and flavorful. Yet closes up at the end, A new single vineyard pinot from here. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. Screw cap. 95/100

-- Decanter: Bright cherry juiciness on the nose comes with notes of crushed red and black berries, followed by toast and pepper. The palate redoubles on this spiciness and comes with firm but fine tannins that makes this come across as muscular and bold. This needs bottle age. The first release of this vineyard and the wine spent 13 months in French oak of which a quarter was new. 95/100

Weingut über: Pinot Noir MacMuir

-- Weingut: MacMuir is the first new Pinot Noir for us since Cornish Point with the 2007 vintage and Calvert in 2006. The land was part of the original Calvert holding that we began leasing in 2001 when it was a hay paddock and nut orchard. After several years of working on the soils while pestering Owen, he eventually relented and agreed to sell it. We commenced planting in 2012 to a higher density, improved row orientation and some new clonal selections of 828 and 943, along with our own carefully selected Abel, and some other favourites. While it’s just a few hundred metres west of our Calvert vineyard, it impressed from the first harvest with its deeper and richer soils always providing an intensity of fruit and plushness. This has contributed impressively to the Bannockburn Pinot Noir for many vintages now, but its unique voice deserved to be heard alone. The name MacMuir comes from Nigel’s family: his mother was of the Muir clan, so he is a MacMuir: the son of a Muir. The Muir name is long associated with Bannockburn with half the subregion and two other vineyards bearing the name (probably because the ancestors of the Muir clan fought at the battle of Bannockburn).Dark fruit and cocoa lead this saturating and brooding bouquet. The palate is similarly in- tense, a different iteration of Felton Road, but it nevertheless has the openness and immediate silky appeal. Sandalwood, dark chocolate and cranberry lingers on a sustained and immensely impressive finish. Certainly no stage fright in this new performer!

Felton Road liegt in Bannockburn direkt im Herzen von Central Otago. Die Berghänge sind nach Norden ausgerichtet und bestehen aus warmen Lössböden. Drei Weinberge nennt Felton Road sein Eigen und alle Weine des Weingutes stammen natürlich aus eigenem Anbau.
