Heiner Lobenberg über:
Siepi 2017

97+
/100

Markus Del Monego über: Siepi

-- Markus Del Monego: A gorgeous wine with intense purple colour and violet hue. Expressive nose with aroma reminiscent of Amarena cherries, mulberries, blackberries as well as fresh rosemary and hints of mint, freshly baked gingerbread, dark chocolate and fine toasting aroma. On the palate opulent yet elegant with freshness, ripe tannins and aromatic depth, mild spices, a slightly balmy touch, excellent length. 97/100

Galloni über: Siepi

-- Galloni: The 2016 Siepi, the estate's Sangiovese/Merlot blend, is a big, rich wine. In 2016, the Merlot is especially prominent. Black cherry jam, torrefaction, spice, leather, menthol and new French oak are all pushed forward. Time in the glass brings out a good bit of aromatic freshness to balance things out. Readers should expect a potent, seriously concentrated wine. 96/100

Decanter über: Siepi

-- Decanter: 2017 was infamous in much of Italy for its hot and dry conditions, and the vines here did not miss out. 'It was hotter in 2022,' says Giovanni Mazzei, 'but there was less hydric stress'. The balsamic stamp of so many other 2017s is also present here - the result of the vines shutting down in the extreme heat and actually preserving freshness. A complex and fragrant nose showcases tobacco leaf, earth, cocoa and petrichor alongside ripe black and blue fruits which also make themselves known on the palate. Super-fresh in the mouth, the plush fruit is supported by grainy cocoa tannins, with an intense balsamic streak of herbs and toasted fenugreek seeds. 29,500 bottles produced. 96/100

Suckling über: Siepi

-- Suckling: The polish and finesse to this gorgeous, rich wine is really impressive with a full-bodied, dense and layered palate and a soft, caressingly textured finish. The chocolate, berry and hazelnut character is all integrated beautifully. Give this time to acquire some refinement. Try after 2023 and onwards. 95/100

Parker über: Siepi

-- Parker: Celebrating its 25th anniversary in a special commemorative bottle, the 2017 Siepi is a beautifully rich ensemble of Sangiovese and Merlot. The hot and dry vintage has pushed both varieties to extra ripeness and darkness—the hallmarks of the vintage. The bouquet is articulate and intense with black fruit, dried blackberry, cherry, spice, earth and toasted almond. There is abundant richness on the nose, but the palate is actually shorter and more streamlined than expected. Siepi is an exceptional vineyard site perched on its own little plateau that is drenched in golden sunlight. 94/100
