-- Suckling: Complex aromas of ripe cherries, black truffles and dried flowers, such as lavender and rose petals. Full-bodied, tight and solid with chewy tannins, yet it’s polished and refined. Undertones of porcini mushrooms and walnut rind. Energetic and focused. Drinkable now, but better in 2022. 95/100

-- Galloni: The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is one of the most expressive wines in this range. Black cherry, plum, spice, leather, sage, rose petal and menthol all flesh out as this sumptuous, bold Riserva opens up in the glass. All the elements are so harmoniously balanced. Pretty floral overtones add sheer allure on the close. The 2017 is absolutely irresistible. 93/100

-- Parker: The Mazzei 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is Sangiovese with a tiny part Merlot and other complementary varieties. Compared to the other releases in this portfolio, Ser Lapo comes across as slightly flashier and more contemporary. It opens to dark and concentrated fruit, with soft spice and tobacco backed by cherry and sun-ripened blackberry. Subtle notes of campfire ash and scorched earth also appear. Like some of the other 2017 wines presented by the Mazzei family, the mouthfeel is thinner and more streamlined than anticipated. 92/100
