Galloni über:
Riesling vom Rotliegenden Ortswein Birkweiler
-- Galloni: Ripe peach and fig are mingled on the nose with sea breeze and smoky black tea. These subsequently inform a lusciously juicy, flatteringly glycerol-slicked palate; smoky and mouthwateringly saline, charred red meat as well as oyster-liquor-like inflections follow into a vibrantly persistent finish that displays a tactile sense of stony mineral impingement. I can imagine half a bottle of this supplying your daily requirements of protein as well as trace minerals! This wine’s name requires a brief explanation. I wrote when reviewing the 2015 that the village designation “Birkweiler” had replaced the long-standing geological descriptor for this cuvée, “vom Rotliegenden.” But that turns out to have been the case only on labels destined for the US market. Elsewhere, “vom Rotliegenden” still prevails, though “Birkweiler” now appears in smaller print on a reverse label (and the bottling will be classified as “Ortswein” by the VDP). 92/100
