Heiner Lobenberg über:
Norte Tempranillo 2020

96–98+
/100

-- Parker: The 2020 Norte is the top-of-the-range red from a north-facing plot in Laguardia at 720 meters in altitude on limestone soils with the mother rock 50 centimeters below the surface. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels and concrete for 12 months. It has 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.48 with 6.15 grams of acidity. This keeps the powerful but fresh and balanced profile, ripe and concentrated. This is still young and needs some more time in bottle to polish the abundant chalky tannins, but there is more restraint and even a touch of austerity, showing a cooler vintage. 11,000 bottles produced.

Tim Atkin über: Norte Tempranillo

-- Tim Atkin: Norte is one of the highest vineyards in the Rioja Alavesa, located at a pretty extreme 720 metres on a gentle slope of clay and limestone soils. Floral and intense, it's like a cross between a Rioja and a Barolo in some ways, with savoury tannins and plenty of acidity, garrigue aromas, a crunchy, chalky palate and intense black cherry and fennel flavours.

Suckling über: Norte Tempranillo

-- Suckling: Dusty dark spices with a hint of black olives to the dark cherries, ripe strawberries, cocoa powder and cedar. Very juicy, fresh and tight on the palate with firm, caressing tannins and a mouthwatering finish. Textured and long, full of succulent berries and a savory cocoa powder edge. Drinkable now, but much better in 2025.

Verkostungsnotiz

Weingut über: Norte Tempranillo

-- Weingut: Pure origin. A “Singular vineyard” which is in direct line with the winds from the north and which sits on a terrain in which the limestone bedrock is only 50 centimetres below the surface. These two features, together with the height (720 metres), give Pujanza Norte notable freshness and acidity which are maintained one vintage after another due to the consistency of the vineyard. A powerful, mature wine. With a clearly defined personality, very expressive and difficult to forget. A vineyard situated at an altitude of 720 m, probably one of the highest vineyards of the Rioja appellation. A clay-lime soil over a limestone bedrock (50 cm. deep) occupying an area of 2.7 has. Spontaneous fermentation with light daily pumping over. Ageing 12 months in 225 L. French oak barrels & concrete vats. Intense cherry-red colour with violet glints. Clear and bright. The fruity character is more subtle in Pujanza Norte, with a presence of wild berries, spices and very well-integrated wood. Its minerality shows the influence of the lime soils from which it comes. A powerful, full mouth-feel with firm but not aggressive tannins. Lively, but at the same time showing great balance between body, acidity and alcohol. A fruity aftertaste, highly expressive and persistent.
