Jeb Dunnuck über: Massetino

-- Jeb Dunnuck: The 2019 Massetino is 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. This is only the third vintage of this cuvée, which adds a splash of Cabernet Franc to give a dramatically different take on Masseto. Ripe black cherries, currants, tobacco leaf, scorched earth, and ample graphite are just some of the nuances here, and it does have a slightly more floral, herbal, focused edge compared to the more round and opulent Grand Vin. Rock solid on the palate and structured, tannic, yet balanced and concentrated, it's built for the long haul and will need 7-8 years to hit maturity, but it’s going to have 25-30 years of overall longevity. 95+/100

Suckling über: Massetino

-- Suckling: Very attractive aromas of currants, spices and sweet tobacco with some graphite and slate. Full-bodied with a rich and rather dense mouth feel, plenty of fruit and a spicy, dark-chocolate aftertaste. A solid and sturdy second wine from Masseto. Try in 2023. 95/100

Weinwisser über: Massetino

-- Weinwisser: Der Massetino ist ein klassischer Zweitwein. Eine Weinbergs-Selektion, meistens aus jüngeren Reben. Interessant ist, dass hier schon 6% Cabernet Franc im Blend enthalten sind. «In Zukunft wird das auch beim Masseto eine Rolle spielen », entlockte ich Axel Heinz bei meiner Exklusivverkostung. Über die Ambivalenz des Merlot in Zeiten von «Global Warming» habe ich ja schon häufiger geschrieben und gerade einen Kommentar in der italienischen Wochenzeitschrift Panorama veröffentlicht. Aber zurück zum Massetino. Eindringlicher Duft von roten und blauen Beeren, dazu kommen kräuterwürzige und florale Akzente. Im Mund ungemein linear ausgerichtet, ganz klar im Auftakt und Verlauf, getragen von einem elaborierten, griffigen Tanninkorsett, das die aromatische Frische der Frucht fest umrahmt. Wird mit Luft immer besser. Man merkt ihm die 15,5 vol%. nicht an. 18+/20

Parker über: Massetino

-- Parker: Tasted before bottling, the 2019 Massetino is shaping up beautifully. This is the third vintage made of the Merlot-based wine enhanced with a small part of Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Franc is what distinguishes this euphemistically diminutive expression of Masseto, and it is its distinctive vinous signature. The 2019 vintage is soft and pliant but also incredibly rich and layered. It offers generous black fruit with ripe cherry and blackberry. Spice, tobacco and campfire ash fill in the rear and build the aromatic profile of this wine that is already stacked tall and proud. We still need to see how the 2019 plays out in the bottle, and I am especially interested to gauge how the thick and rich fruit concentration works against the less pronounced acidity of the vintage. 94-96/100

Falstaff über: Massetino

-- Falstaff: Sattes, funkelndes Rubin mit Violettschimmer. Intensive und ansprechende Nase mit viel satter Beerenfrucht, Schwarzkirsche, Brombeere und Cassis, dazu etwas Nougat und Tabak. Im Ansatz dicht und tiefgründig, dunkle Beerenfrucht, öffnet sich mit griffigem Tannin, im Finale noch ein wenig diffus, braucht Lagerung.94/100

Wine Spectator über: Massetino

-- Wine Spectator: Here's a plush, opulent, in-your-face kind of red, without being over the top. Toasty blackberry, black cherry and plum aromas and flavors ply the center, graced by leather, earth and tobacco accents. Dense, yet finishes long and light on its feet. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2033. 93/100
