Jaen
-- Parker: The 2015 Jaen Quinta da Pellada was aged in five-year-old French oak for 15 months and comes in at 13% alcohol. Álvaro Castro kept saying to me when I first saw this that 'this vintage was so hard,' but that Jaen is an earlier picked grape harvested before the worst of the weather conditions. Of course, challenging vintages do not necessarily mean unsuccessful vintages. When last seen about three years back, this seemed potentially even more special, but a bit lacking in nuance. Let's check in. This has evolved nicely. It shows off some tart strawberries, gorgeous mid-palate finesse and a fresh, flavorful finish. It's always dry, elegant and serious with mostly ripe tannins for support. Beautifully focused, this also seems poised to age well. I'd say it is not yet at peak and can still improve more. It does drink reasonably well now, though. It's a wonderful Jaen. 94/100
